I Thought It Was Safe

Last week I bought an Adore rinse in medium brown. Wanted something a bit lighter than my natural near-black, and I thought it shouldn't be too bad since there's "no ammonia, no peroxide, etc." Plus, I don't have any other chemicals in my hair and I've been treating my hair super-nice for about the past 8 months.

Well, I put it on after a good shampoo and deep condition. When I finished my hair was so brittle-feeling and matted up when wet that I couldn't even get my fingers through it. I had to do another deep condition for several hours to get it back to normal. But ever since then I've noticed that my hair has been breaking more and more and I'm afraid that this is going to turn into a setback. And to add to it, the color didn't even take!

Does anyone have any suggestions? Things were going so well...

Oh sweetie I am so sorry this happened to you. It seems that most people don't have problems with rinses but every now and then someone does and experiences just what you described. I want to cover my gray but I am so afraid. If I were you I'd twist or braid it and leave it alone for a couple of weeks. I hope you get lots of good advice ((((((hugs)))))) to you.

I think that rinse may have had too much protein, which could have wreaked havoc on your natural hair. I'd do a light shampoo and moisturizing DC to get it back right.

I hope this helps.

yea i use to be able to use adore when i was relaxed. since i have been natural it has given me problems twice!! so i am done with that brand. last time i used it in cherry rinse it left my hair hard as a brick. the only hair dye that has NOT given me a problem are Manic Panic hair dye. My hair loves that stuff!

Damn boingboing, everytime I see your hair I forget to read what you type :lachen:. The waves are SICK! I know I've said that before, but oh well:grin:

Anyhoo OP, I would increase my moisturizing DC's and cowash. If your schedule permits, DC 2 x's/wk w/heat until you start to see a change. Make sure the conditioners you're using have NO protein in them and stay diligent. Sometimes it takes a while to bounce back from a protein OD.

I think I'll DC tonight with a good moisturizing conditioner and then twist my hair up and leave it for the rest of the week. I need a way to keep my hands out of my hair anyway. My natural hair is so fragile. :ohwell:

I think I "overheard" some LHCF women saying that using henna turned their grey hairs a nice brownish-red. That might not be your natural color, but it could be safer than a rinse. I'm sure there are threads on that.

i love adore but i am relaxed. even when i use it i can tell it has a lot of protein because either my hair will need a good deep condition or it will just make it feel strong. the last couple of times my hair felt too strong so i stopped using rinses period. i may start again later on down the road.

Yes. The hair dye probably contained more protein than your natural hair can tolerate. Just condition condition condition (preferably a moisturizing deep condition).

Also You can't lighten your hair with a rinse. The dye HAS TO contain a certain amount of peroxide to be able to lighten the hair. You can slightly tint dark hair with a rinse but not lighten.

Which DC did you use?

That's good to know. I'd never had my hair colored before. As for the DC, I just put on my Tresemme Remoisturizer conditioner with EVOO and left it on for hours. Maybe I should invest in some "real" hair treatments...but I do like to keep it simple.

 Oh no no! You need a proper deep conditioner hun. You don't have to spend much money at all.. you can go to your local BSS or Pharmacy and buy one for under $5. If you use any type of color on your hair you NEED to DEEP condition. a regular rinse out conditioner (like the one you used) is not able to penetrate the hair shaft no matter how long you leave it on for.

See, this is why I need and love this forum. I guess I thought that 1) rinses don't chemically alter the hair, and 2) that because I'm natural that I don't need to penetrate the hair shaft since the hair hasn't been chemically damaged. Not true?

Btw, Noir, your hair is really pretty. :yep:

So, I ran out and got Pantene Pro-V's Nourishing moisture replenishing mask, and my hair feels great! No more breakage. I honestly didn't know that "deep" conditioners were separate things, and this is the first time that I've used one. ...I think I feel a new hair obsession coming on...:look:
