anyone else have this problem? every time i try to moisturise and "seal" with an oil, my hair gets stiff and hard. it gets stiff eventually depending on how long i go without shampooing, but i think my hair seems to be in generally worse conditions when i put an oil in it.

if your hair does something similar, how do you treat it?

Hello,
In my case, I wouldn't necessarily say my hair doesn't like oil, but it seems to favor heavy butters/pomades alittle more to help seal in moisture. Since the start of the winter season I've traded in my oil for my shea butter /cocoa butter/olive oil/castor oil mix.
I add my leave-in and apply this butter mix every night and the next day? I wake up with soft, well-moisturized hair. Also, one other thing I may add: The butter doesn't leave my hair feeling as weighed down as it would with oil alone. :yup:

No ma'am, I use the "Raw" african shea butter and "Raw" Cocoa butter to make my hand-whipped mix. But that product looks like it may be worth a try! I've always been a fan of cantu-shea butter products (primarily their leave-in) so I have a feeling that this particular goody wouldn't disappoint. If you try it out, would you please report back with your results?

thats interesting. i know ive used coconut oil before - i imagine it was all natural as it was the kind meant to be cooked with - and my hair wasnt in any better shape from it.

to be honest, sometimes i think my hair feels better using "grease" products, but what does that say about my hair?

I mixed avocado oil/tea tree oil with water and its soooo much better than applying it straight.

I only put oil on my straightened hair, and I don't moisturize before hand. I use pure coconut oil (the type you would cook with) and it really helps my hair bounce back after using heat or coloring.

Oddly enough, my wet hair does NOT like oil at all, so I don't use it. Your damp hair might like something thicker like a butter or oil/moisturizer mix. I use Dove leave in on my damp hair, it's a somewhat thick cream and I like that better.

i think my hair probably would do a lot better with cremes. after shampooing i sometimes use conditioner for a leave in and it takes down soft. but im sure a creme or butter would be better.

what are those though? :look: i dont think i have ever used such a thing before. can i have some recommendations please?

Maybe it's the type your using. I don't think my hair likes straight avocado. I typically seal with a pomade these days. Unless it's mixed in a product oils work for me best directly applied to my scalp.

However my hair does not like pre pooing with just oil or hot oil treatments.

I only have the stiff hair problem with coconut oil. Everyone in the world swears by this stuff, but I can't let it anywhere near my hair. Not even as a prepoo or hot oil treatment. My hair happiest with sunflower or grapeseed oil. I can use Evoo or Jojoba but those tend to be a little heavy if I don't mix them with something lighter. For a buttery sealer I LOVE Jane Carter Nourish and Shine but that price is no joke.

Me! My hair hates oils and apparently butters too although I have only tried one butter. I made a whole thread on it too and there is a lot of advice on that thread. Check it out: http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=709255

Your hair may be low porosity because low porosity hair has a hard time absorbing things. Or your hair may just simply not like oils. You're not the only one there are many black women who's hair doesn't like it either. It's really hard to seal in the moisture from leave ins so my hair remains dry. A lot of ladies like us use aloe vera juice or gel to seal and it works. I haven't tried this yet though but I did just order a custom made spritz that is made of quiona and aloe Vera gel and juice and a very very light oil that will not leave a greasy feeling.

I also just ordered ungurahua. I heard from NaturallyAmari ( an etsy seller) that most oils and butters will leave your hair dry and crispy yet still oily, but even if not dry and crispy it will still leave a greasy feel because most oils do not actually sink into the hair follicle. Anyways she suggested the ungurahua oil and I'm going to try it. Ill post back and let you know how it goes for me.

I found back when I tried using oils my hair didnt feel so great and I also got SSKs. I don't get them any more now I don't use thick butters, or thinner oils.

i put some in when i took my hair down from fridays shampoo today. already it feels a lot better. not hard, not coarse. springy and full. an improvement for sure. that helps me to know i definitely need to get away from oils. but i am not sold on this being the best i can do, so i guess my butter/pomade search begins here.
