I think I want to color a patch of hair

I have never dyed, colored, rinsed or applied henna to my hair. I figured since I am going natural a fun way to keep track of growth when shrinkage gets me down would be to have a very small patch of hair around the middle of my head colored. I figured I would be able to hide the color if it is in the middle the easiest.
Has anyone ever done this before? Did you go to a salon for it? Were you able to hide the color with the rest of your hair? For DIY people what tips would you recommend for just a 1 inch patch?

Hmmm, I have wondered about this before. It seems like a pretty exact way to measure new growth.
