I permed my hair

Crackers Phinn

Either A Blessing Or A Lesson.
Ok, not really, but I've made a decision.

If I cannot get some type of control over these knots and tangles by May of next year (2 yr anniversary of BC, 3 years worth of natural hair growth), then I'm incorporating heat into my regimen and wearing my hair straight (or as straight as I can get it).

I can't be 35 wearing a puff all the damn time.

I have no idea why I thought that after I went natural I was going to morph into some master braider/twister and hook myself up with a variety of natural styles. Naw son, that ish didn't happen.

I dig my texture, but I also wanna get my grown woman on and pufftacular ain't doing it for me.

I just thought I'd share.

ETA: 8/23/08 - I'm totally relaxed!

I'm not natural, I'm transitioning, but I feel you! I'm curious about my natural texture, but I'm already afraid of how I'm going to style it. I can't braid (other than box braids), and I've never tried twists. I don't want to be wearing a puff all the time, either. I guess I'll have to wait and see.:look:

IMO, though, as long as your hair is healthy, you can wear it however you want. Just be careful with your heat use, so you don't permanently fry your natural hair.

 awwwww. wat happened?

girl you just gotta keep at it with those twists and 'rows. it didn't come to me easily either but i refused to let a hair style get the best of me, just kept plugging away.

try doing a half a head instead of a whole one :)

I agree with you! I prefer to wear my hair straight.:yep:

I agree with everything you said especially the trying to be a master braider/twister because it is not happening for me either. I use heat in my regimen and (blowdryer) my fro' is getting bigger and bigger but I'm always in a dilemma with styling. My braids lasted about 3 weeks but now I'm back in my hat and not sure what to do with it.

Don't play...

Be careful with that heat JCoily! I'd hate to see you starting a thread talkin' about you have a scrait patch.

hey jcoily. i wore my hair natural for about a year and i think those knots at the ends of the hair are inevitable.

about the tangles, how are you detangling? are you doing it while there is some moisturizer in the hair?

this is true. before i decided to wear my hair fully natural i pressed it on and off for a couple of years. by heta styling it consistently for 3 months i got some parts that remained straight, plus a press in the summer doesnt work (well not for me).

I detangle with shampoo in my hair. I've tried doing it with conditioner, but I can't get the wide tooth comb through my hair with con.

The tangles are usually shed hairs that get caught in the knots.

Girl if I get a scrait patch, I'ma toss some gel in the mix and put it in a sloppy braid so that it has some texture to blend.

I am not above bootlegging natural hair! :lachen:

:computer: You had my heart jumping in my throat! I got all upset seeing the title.

I nearly started hyperventilating! :spank:

(though I do understand where you coming from)

Can you at least make sure you take a few before pics of the puff before you do the deed?:look:

If you do decide to use heat on the regular, I would take a look at PinkSkate's fotki. She has natural waistlength hair that she straightens and her hair is gorgeous

I am not sure of her exact regimen (besides using Aveda) but I am sure she will share it with you:)

I think you may have already tried Aveda but I find that Damage Remedy is great for detangling.

LOL I knew you didnt perm it forreal. If you did I was going to be upset. :ohwell: But are puffs the only thing you wear? Is there a natural hair stylist nearby that you can go to? A lot of times the African braid shops do natural styles for reasonable prices. I've seen a few people come in for 2 strand twists and loc maintenance when I was there before.

:lachen: :lachen: :lachen: This is hilarious. I felt this way for a little while, then I found the braidout and well...he changed my world. I almost cried when I say the tagline though.

Ya'll have got me scared! I thought that as my hair grew out the knots would stop when I was able to starte wearing puff and not my shruken fro all the time. Hump...seems like a tex. might be off in my not to distant future if I want to retain length...

Are the knots really that bad cmw45? Our hair should be about the same length. I haven't really had any knots but I thought that maybe that would change when my hair got longer. The only time I see knots is when my hair is dry around the very edges. Like when I have a weave in, the hair around the very edge always comes out of the braids and it feels dry. And it'll have those little 1 strand knots. So I try and keep the edges extra moisturized. Other than that I don't really get any.

I've been thinking the same lately...

I had a major knot issue last winter and I could not figure out for the life of me what the problem was. Now I know that I must detangle my hair very well, like wide tooth comb then denman or fine tooth comb. I have to get the sheds out because I am a very heavy shedder. Once I accomplish this and keep my ends moisturized I am usually OK. I do feel you on the frustration. When I get tired of the knots I lock my hair down in braids, twists or something or I will just straighten it. That gives me a break until I can get my mind together. Also, do you need a trim? I find that when my ends get ragedy it is time to trim them a bit and then my hair is happy from there.

Be careful with the heat? How about blowing your hair straight on a very low setting with heat protectant and then putting it in 4 big bantu knots for a wavy look. Or even a rollerset maintained with bantu knots. That's how I got the look in my siggy.

I knew you were kidding!

Try wearing it straight for a while. I keep telling you ladies that the flat iron is not all that bad. Someone has put a lot of fear into you concerning heat, but it's really not so bad. My hair actually seems stronger when it's straight than when it's in a braidout or twistout.

:littleang Good angel says "of course we will support any decision you make" We are your family and then does the chorus to Dream Girls "we are a family" song.

:fallenang Bad angel says- Don't let me come up there and whip you. Because King Kong ain't got nothing on me. Stop triping. You are sexy with your natural hair. Just switch up the styles. Straighten every once and a while for style differences.

I do it occasionally. My curls have loosened up from using the iron.

Is there something about the seasons changing that messes with a person's hair? I went natural last summer and everything was great for awhile. My hair was moisturized, laid down well, and had no knots or tangles. Then around April for some unknown reason my hair started to act crazy. Products stopped working well, then knots at the end of the strands, and finally major tangles :(.

Nothing seems to really help. I clarified, deep conditioned, detangle using a wide toothed comb in the shower, followed by more detangling with a denman. But the ends of my strands feel weird and coarse and want to stick together. I just got my hair cut at the end of May so it seems like I shouldn't need a trim. I don't know what to do. Being natural seemed like it was going to be easy, but now I don't know what to do with my hair.

Jcoily I feel your pain too. Ive been nappy for 7 years, and I am really tired of the puff and twists. I think I will relax before the end of the year.

I am militantly anti-heat. If anyone wants to see a pic of my sisters hair destroyed through one flat ironing session ( freshly washed, heat protectant, low setting flat iron) i will post it. Yes many people here will attest to long term straightening however many morewill show signs of heat damage once it returns to its natural state.
What about a weave or a lace front?
heat( in my opinion) is the devil!!!

Jc I know how you feel.
I was natural and couldn't twist, braid nothing and I HATE letting other people handle my hair and PAY them on top of that.
Whatever is easy for you,it's your hair.
