I got on the shuttle at work today to get back to my office. I noticed that the shuttle driver, who previously had a honey blond medium sized afro, had recently relaxed her hair. I was a little intrigued because she's been really sporting her fro well. Anyway, I felt compelled to ask her why she relaxed esp. because she was wearing an uncombed wrap that didn't look as good as when she wore the fro. (OT: is a wrap considered a hairstyle)
So, this is how the conversation went.
Me: Oh my gosh, you relaxed your hair!?
Her: Yeah.
Me: why did you relax?
Her: my friends and family were telling me that my natural hair just wasn't cute, and I was tired of hearing them talk about it.
Me: aww..so sorry to hear that. I thought it looked really good. I don't know why people are so negative towards natural hair. I'm transitioning back to natural.
Her: Really? I've been natural for a year. I really don't like my hair now. I don't know why, but it keeps breaking off.
Me: Yep, I'm transitioning to natural. I don't care what anyone says abotu my hair. I once went out with this guy, and had combed my hair back in a bun. When we were ready to go, he asked me, "you're not going to comb your hair?" . That didnt' even bother me. Right now, I'm wearing a protective style which is my full weave until I get to my desired length, and then I'll clip the relaxed ends off gradually after I get there. A lot of people probably think I'm bald headed under here.
Me: You know what? I found these two hair boards that I go on to get a lot of information about caring for my hair, and getting it to the length that I want. They've both been really helpful. I was btw nl and cl last year, and now my hair is the longest it's ever been. (I showed her a pic of when I blowed out my hair before I got it done) They have a lot of good information for relaxed and natural hair, and even albums where you can view real progress of women on there.
Her: I've always wanted to rock a big afro with a flower on the side of my hair. I always thought that would look so cute. What's the name of the site?
Me: Here you go. (I wrote the url for lhcf) Alright, take care.
Her: Thank you.
I don't know why, but I felt so happy after I gave her that information. I've shared this with my sister and cousin before, but they haven't really taken it seriously. Well my sister did in the begin and startd to slack off. So, hopefully she'll check out this site and get that BAA that she wants.
