I Need A Pep Talk....

Napp

Ms. Nobody
Y'all I didn't think it was going to be so hard to find a job. I am so discouraged...I went on an interview a week ago and they didn't call me to schedule the practical interview. I go to all of these interviews and never get called back. I'm feeling a bit defeated.

I am on indeed everyday looking for something. I just will not work for free like I was at that one salon. 12 dollars for 6 weeks on the weekends.

It's like they want to either use my lack of experience to exploit me or they require I have multiple years of experience. now so much time has elapsed since I graduated and my license It looks odd that I haven't been hired.

Idk what to do next. I was thinking about blogging again

I thinking blogging would be great for you to get back into. Some things I hate to suggest but will throw out there:

Put out free ads
Join some Facebook groups and enlist your services
Build up a clientele and may rent a chair

I know your far in Long Island so Queens is the only option, but you may have to venture further or just find a way to build your own experience.

Great advice!

I pray you find something soon!! @Napp

Thanks it seems like I would have to work in the city. there seems to be nothing entry level nearby me

Have you not looked in Manhattan yet?
Maybe do people's hair so you have some pics to add to your portfolio/website/blog?

I haven't seriously looked in Manhattan because I am not a fan of the hour and a half or more commute. it seems I'm just going to have to bite the bullet

You've gotten great advice in here, I don't really have anything else to add. I think before you mentioned you've exhausted chain salons as an option as well.
Just wanted to offer a :bighug:

You will get there, just keep pushing!
And I second @sharifeh on building a social media presence. The last two stylists I have used for weaves, I found on Instagram. :yep:

Hang in there, Napp.

Do you do twists/braids on natural hair? There are a lot of ladies looking for a good stylist to do that for them -- especially after they see your pretty hair.

You can pick up clients at colleges, churches, community centers, etc. Craigslist and posting fliers might be a good way to advertise your services.

Get your side hustle going until something opens up. Maybe you could also apply to work in a salon as a non-stylist first to get your foot in the door. And coming with your own clientele might make you a more attractive addition to a salon too ;)

Oh, I just remembered another idea.
I did hair from my apartment in college (weaves, braids, and silk presses) during college for some extra money. I advertised on Craigslist and got a decent amount of clients until I just couldn't keep up with doing hair + my classwork.

Definitely try advertising on Craigslist! You should attract way more people than I did, since you are a legit licensed cosmetologist and not just a master side hustle scammer like I was :giggle:. Make sure you include pictures of your work!
