How do most of yall color your hair? I've always just gone up to the grocery store and grabbed some hair color in a box. Is it always necessary to go to a salon to ensure healthy hair?

Nope... It was actually salon color that RUINED my hair March '06. I went in for a highlight touchup and the trick bleached my hair. I wasn't watching to know what was going... sigh.. :ohwell:

The color I have now in my fotki me & my best friend did it. I had her pull my hair through a highlight cap. Then I mixed together 2 Texture & Tones box kits to get the color I wanted. I then applied the color on the hair that had been pulled through the cap.

As long as you keep the proper protein and mositure in your hair, you can have healthy, colored hair whether you do it at home or go to the salon. Just if you go to the salon PLEASE make sure they do exactly what you want... whether that is bleaching it or not.

Some of the ladies here have success using Bigen hair color (permanent), which is supposed to be safe for relaxed hair since it has no ammonia or peroxide.

Others use henna (also permanent) as a natural way to color hair. It conditions and strengthens the hair also. Check out the Bigen or henna threads.
:)
BTW, you may want an option for "other" in your poll.

I guess it would depend on the present state of your hair, whether you're relaxed or natural and whether you want a permanent color or a rinse.

I personally haven't had a permanent color since '04. I did a Colourshine rinse in Coffeebean at home last year but my hubby thought it was too dark.

I've since decided to try henna for all of the above mentioned reasons and for color. I definitely think natural products are the way to go.

If you do a search I'm sure you'll find countless threads on the color debate.

I do my own color rinses. I mostly use colors that are closest to my hair's natural color so the grow out is less noticable and a lot of bleach isn't involved. I color my hair 3-4 times a year.
