Bulletproof

Some background:I am transitioning and my last relaxer was sometime late May. I have enough new growth to be troublesome when handling my hair but not enough for much else. I have been half wigging for the past 3 weeks. Before that I had only had one blowout in late June. I have not flat ironed or straightened. I cut my hair in April myself due to stress. In May when I got my relaxer I got a blunt chin length bob. In June when I got the wash and set and blew out my roots only. I got another trim as it looked like the cut I received in May was uneven. No splits, seemingly healthy hair at chin length. I find LHCF and decide to transition. Once I decide to half wig I box braid all my hair saving a bang portion in the front. I realized within the first week of half wig wearing I could wear the wig and a headband and push the front section back under the wig and have not manipulated that portion of hair either.
Tonight playing in the new growth in the front part of my hair a strand comes out. I look at the strand from the root and notice something funny close to the root. Upon closer examination I see about an 1.5 inches down from the root that the hair is splitting. Immediately I go into panic mode because it would mean my hair is split all the way up the shaft. I look for more strands to come out. When they do none are split on the ends or up the shaft of the hair. So now I go back to scrutinizing this split hair. The length of the hair is 9 inches and look and feel healthy. I do the moisture/protein strands test and it performs well. It is not split anywhere else on the shaft but that one location.
My questions are:
Why would it split so close to the root, just a .5 inch above my demarcation line? The only thing I can think of is that one blow dry I received in June maybe I got heat damage or am I just reaching for any explanation?
Should I keep looking for more strands like this over the next few days?
If I find more do I chuck transitioning out the door and big chop to prevent further damage
If I don't find more would you still recommend doing a big chop because one strand like that is enough to say something is not right?
