I know moisture is good, but...

Ever since I found this board, I've been clicking every thread that said something about breakage... that's my biggest problem.

I've been wearing a bun lately because I'm 7 weeks post relaxer, but my hair seems more like its 10 weeks post, which is bad because I'm trying to stretch to 12 weeks. :(

Anyhoo, I've been wearing this bun for a week. (I washed, rollerset, sat under the hooded dryer, then put it in a bun. I tie this bun up at night, and in the morning I smooth the stray hairs with my hands.) I moisturized my ends with EQP Mango butter and sealed it with some oil.

When I got ready to wash again, I combed thru my hair, and there was NO BREAKAGE!!! Sure there was some shedding, because I hadn't combed my hair in a week, but all of the hairs had bulbs, so I knew that it was just shedding.

So now I see that the key to stopping my breakage is moisture, but my hair is very fine and a good moisturizer will weigh it down and make it look very, very, very thin. I don't mind bunning it, but I think maybe I tie it up too tight or something, because I have A LOT of breakage at the nape.

Does anyone know of any good moisturizers that won't weigh my hair down, or even a way to tie up a bun without experiencing a lot of rubbing or breakage at the nape??

Try this method: Cut out the wide part of a pair of tights or support hose. Before you bun your hair, comb it all back and pull the hose over your head, down to your neck. Make your bun. Pull the hose back over your head, but keep the bottom part underneath the bun. You should have enough length to cover your entire head (but not your face), plus the top part of your bun. Loosely but firmly tie the hose over your bun at this point, preferably with a smaller piece of hose. You can either leave it as is, with everything covered, or gently roll the upper part of the hose over the entire length of your bun (picture turning it inside out, while in place). I hope these instructions are clear. This is what I do when I use the baggie method. It gives the added benefit of covering the plastic cap on my bun with a hose color that closely matches my hair, preventing any kind of show-through.

I forgot to mention: if you try this method and find that the hose slips off during the night, place a stretch headband around your head, over the hose.

Hi Beauty,

I feel you, I am nearly 7 weeks post relaxer and I am now at the point where I can only bun my hair. I wash condition and roller set with a dryer also.
GREAT COMBINATION!!! To keep our new-growth soft.
I also have the fine hair thing, I am also finding it difficult to find a light moisturizer. I did use a Olive Oil spray sheen, but I am sure whether it really really moisturizering or just made it shine. It did keep my hair light though.
Something for you to look into. I had the nape problem back in Nov 04, it was broken 3 cm form the back of my neck upwards and about 3mm short.!!!!!
Now its 3 inch long the longest its every been. I recommend you pay more attention to the back when conditioning, add more moisturizer to the back, and don’t use hair bands for a while. I use hair clasps that just hold the hair without applying as much pressure as a band. Its so light I forget its in sometimes.

HTH
