Hola Como estas mi llamo stephanie y tengo diecinueve..lol ok thats all i know right now:p ...um hi i'm a young girl who's been lurkin for some time but i recently started getting really interested in growing my hair out....

the thing is, i'm going off to college on aug 27 and i dont really know how to do my hair other than putting it in a ponytail like literally thats pretty much as far as it goes lol and since i'm going to start growing my hair i was just wondering what styles u guys use like, ok i bought the Nexxus shampoo and mane 'n tail conditioner and the silk elements mayonnaise to use but after i do that i'm pretty much lost like do i put my hair in a bun or do coils or does it really matter what hairstyle i do just as long as i keep it moisturized and stuff

also i've heard about the henna thing and i saw a packet at the store but i know thats not the kind i should use...all i know about it is that it makes your hair thick but i already have really thick hair so i dont know if i really need that

i'm still not sure what the boundless thing is but does that make your hair grow fast and vitamins and stuff?uuuggghh i'm so confused i dont want it to seem like i haven't read anything here cuz i've literally gone through the first 30 pages and so on but i just need like to know where to start off at in my journey u know? um gosh this seems like alot i'll just like post my homepage and u can see my hair on there somewhere and all of the pics are from a year ago except the long curly one which was most recent and if anyone can help please contact me thanks

myspace.com/manoloblahnikfan

my hair is at the end of of my neck and healthy and thick so yea basically thats how i describe it...my avi is a pic of me in my weave from a few months back and thats my goal longer than that would be nice too:grin:

and um are those the right products i bought?

Welcome newbie. We ain't Spaniards we're hair happy heifalumps round herre. The search feature at the top will help you out alot for starters. There is a load of information here that is your for the taking.

When you go off to school you won't be alone on the hair tip. I found that out when I sent my child off to university 4 years ago. She only knew how to do a ponytail also.

I sent her to a DC LHCF hair meeting and they hooked her up.

Anyways welcome.:) Your going to be way too busy with your head stuck in a book and acclimating yourself to your new environment to do alot to your hair. :lachen: Best of luck in your endeavors. God bless you.

Hi welcome! the basics hair tips are : abstaining from heat, deep conditioning weekly, and moisturizing at least once a day with a water based moisturizer, and stretching ur relaxer a slong as u can.

when u click on the hair section, there should be a sticky thats called your favorite sticky. click on it, and u will see the link to the newbie's thread. that has a lot of infomation to get u started. HTH.

Welcome to the forum! :)

I haven't used any of the products you mentioned so I can't say whether they're good. But as someone who's about to graduate college I do have some advice on that end. Use this summer to experiment and find a couple of products that work really well for you. Then before you go off to school make sure you have enough of those products to last you at least until your first scheduled trip home. I say this b/c sometimes college towns are small and it can be frustrating looking for good products in their limited selection.

Also, depending on what region of the country your college is in, be prepared to deal with some hard water issues. Dealing with that messes up a lot of people on their hair journey. If you do a search there is a thread with a map of all the hard water regions in the country. For me, using ORS creamy aloe shampoo has helped my hair cope with the hard water.

Well, that's all the advice I have for now, best of luck on your hair journey. College will be a great experience.

P.S.
Beware amateur student "stylists" on campus. There's always a handful of girls on any campus known for doing hair (not for free mind you), and some of them can set you back on your progress if you're not careful. I found this out when I let one of them relax me and she started relaxing my hair root to tip--major overlapping. That was my last relaxer; it pushed me to go natural (my hair wasn't messed up--I stopped her in time--but I was tired of leaving my haircare in other people's hands)

Welcome to LHCF! Everyone has said mostly what I was going to say. 1.Low manipulation,

2.water based moisturizer,

3.deep condition with a moisturizing shampoo and use a protein treatment if you need it. Keep the balance between moisture and protein in your hair meaning if your hair becomes to stretchy and gummy (try not to let it get to this) then you need more protein to hold the shaft together. Not enough moisture means your strands are breaking or snapping when you gently tug on them.

4.when you get to shoulder length try to keep your ends from sweeping against your clothes (causes split ends) even most people said they've achieved their goal length without doing this.

5. use a heat protectant when using heat (duh! what else but heat)/

6.water based moisturizer meaning it shouldn't feel greasy and the first ingredient should be aqua or water.

7.take your vitamins, eat healthy and drink water. your insides are just as important as your outsides.

9. dust your ends when need and baggy when they feel dry for a couple of days. baggying is just putting your hair in a bun with an ouchless band and putting moisturizer in the plastic bag and on your ponytail, securing the baggy bun with another ouchless tie, wearing it all day and then taking it off at night. and repeating until your ends feel stronger and more moisturized.

10. last but not least, don't get discouraged by friends or family (if you choose to tell them because I assure there will be haters.)

And since your hair is in great condition anyway, you don't have to cut it and can start from where you are. By the time you graduate college, you will be atleast bsl healthy if you stay on track. Congrats! I wish I knew about LHCF 3 years ago.:p

oh wow u guys are great, i'm letting my hair air dry right now...i'm really really trying to stay away from heat products so i'm trying to find out where to buy the i think they are called satin rollers or something? anyhoo yea i'm learning how to braid right now because i think having my hair in a pony doesn't do it that much good so i'm trying to stay away from that also....u guys are great with the college advice to cuz i'm from southern cali and my college is on the border with oregon and my sis went there and she told me basically i'll be one of MAYBE 10-20 black folks lol so i already know i have to stack up on hair products fake ponys, etc so yea i'm taking these months right here to figure out how to make it all work anyway thanks to all of u... u really were a great help and i'm gonna start drinking water lol

welcome. it sounds like you got the right products. just throw in a moisturizing conditioner (since I think Mane N tail is protein) and you'll be all set. Do you have a leave-in conditioner already?

Hi, I'm new too.
I can't tell by your avatar, but are you relaxed or natural? That might give you some guidance and narrow some info down for you. Most things are universal, though.
