"I keep my hair stretched." How? Please s'plain!

How often are you washing/wetting your hair and resulting in you having to re-stretch? I'm very worried about overmanipulation and all of a sudden having a ton of SSK or midshaft splits, worn ends...all the things I've been trying to avoid by PS.

Now that is what I need to know because I wound up cutting my hair after a terrible flat iton incident after three years of growth and found out my SSKs and mid shaft splits were BAD, so my hair was doomed from the get go, that heat session just sealed the deal. I picked at my hair today and found an SSK...and I am like ready to make a trim appt.

This is what works for me/ We all have to find what works for our hair and our lifestyles.

Hope that helps!!

MzSwift Thanks so much for those details and pics. Banding really does make a difference! I completely forgot about banding. It's something I heard about way in the beginning of my journey. I was trying to tell from the pic, but what are you using to band your hair?

You can use weave tread to just my two cents

[*]How are you "keeping" it stretched? I'd like to try the curlformers.

flat twisting
chunky twists
just got some flexirods and a trial pack of curlformers

wash every week mos times, on occasion I may go 2 weeks if i have a cornrow style.

[*]How are you maintaining the stretched styles? Pineappling? Bunched into a satin bonnet?

When I have an "out"style I re twist every night ( 8 - 10 chunky twists) I use this time to moisturize and seal my ends and do some removal of shed hairs.

I dont use products with hold so if I want definition on day two i have to re twist in the night. On rare occasions I will pineapple

[*]Do you feel like your hair is progressing in length and health keeping it stretched, or are you willing/or have to sacrifice those things for style?

yes, definitely been seeing a difference. Went a whole year last year with minimal retention and Ive already seen improvements over the last 2 months that Ive been doing this.

Im hoping that with using the flexi rods and eventually curlformers I'll be able to keep my hair more stretched and see better results.

:I think I want to start doing this permanently...with twists...I've been keeping my hair stretched for the past few days and it seems to make a difference. Today I wet sections of my twists out of the shower, then added conditioner to the sections and banded them and rinsed in the showe while they were banded.

used 2 hair bands for each section...one at the base and one that wrapped around the entire ponytail section thingymajiggle.

Id love to try and prevent too much tangling at the root, too much unraveling at the ends...it's also nice to have a more stretched look and perhaps prevent the amount I"d have to detangle....I dunno.

I really need to be more careful, though, about causing myself too much shrinkage.

I like to rinse/condition inbetween major wash days and I intend on continuing that, but gonna start keeping it stretched while I do it...and then still stretching as it's drying.

I wear WnGs 99% of the time. I keep it stretched by banding at night. This stops my roots and hair from tangling while I sleep. I moisturize my hair, seal w/grapeseed oil, and band it up. I have no ssks or breakage. I will also do a light finger detangle if needed.

soooo last week was my first trial at keeping my hair continually stretched.

i used banding as my method.

so i washed/dc/detangled/moisturized and all that, then i banded my hair to dry and twisted on stretched hair. then i re-banded the twists at night to keep them stretched and also banded my hair whenever i rinsed/conditioned them...i'd put one hair tie at the base and then another down the section to band it.

i banded my hair every night before bed also.

so last night was about a week since i twisted my hair and by now my hair is usually a tangled mess because i tend to rinse/condition a lot...

buuut to my pleasant surprise, my twists were EXTREMELY easy to remove. it took me like...10 minutes tops to get them all out. i couldnt believe my freakin eyes.

so, i'm gonna continue this "stretched" thing this week and see how it keeps working.

Nice thread! I was just thinking about keeping my hair stretched when I stop PS-ing all the time.

Interesting thread. Bumping for more replies. I kind of let my hair do it's on thing and that may be why I run into problems mid week.
