Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

1. lower the protein
2. up the moisture
3. eliminate the use of heat

I use to experience those little bits of broken hairs all the time, when I began to follow those 3 rules my hair retention took off...it was amazing, heck I'm still amazed.

The one thing I had to do was find the perfect moisturizer for my hair so I experimented A LOT :look: ...all of last year I used aloe vera gel mixed with curl activator gel as my moisturizer and wet bunned daily. I use tea tree castile liquid soap as my poo (weekly) and I DC'd with megatek or ovation twice per month...my hair grew from barely touching my shoulders to 1/2 inch from APL.

You would think that my experimenting would stop right? Nope. :look: My new search was for a moisturizer that kept my hair feeling moist without it being wet all the time. I finally found it...for my dry styles I now use (and absolutely fell in love with) Elucence MB mixed with a few drops of JBCO and wheatgerm oil. That my dear will get my hair to BSL (or longer) by the end of this year I can just feel it. :yep:

Keep in mind that you can have a "professional" look without the use of heat, like one poster mentioned earlier you can wear your hair in a bun, you can wear it in a braidout or a twistout...there are *many* styles you can try.

May your length dreams come true! :hug2:

It stays dry. I use african pride braid spray for moisture. And I hate wash day because their are a thousand little pieces of hair in the shower. :(

Have you tried African Royale braid spray. IMO its much, much better and leaves the hair more moisturised:yep:. I have noticed some of the others leave my hair dry way too quickly so I make sure I get my AR.

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

Ok so last night I did olive oil and kenra slept in a plastic cap. Woke up today to a tangled matted mess in the back. One lesson learned I can not baggie. :( I washed with my loprox shampoo and now I am DC with Kenra and 5n1 and castor oil. Hopefully I will be able to get the tangles out. I might just get a weave.

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

Hey there, Kinchen, so sorry to hear the baggying didn't work for you :( One thing I've noticed, as a natural, also, is that I can baggy occassionally before wash day but I have to put my hair into fat twists with the conditioner in. I could never lay down with my hair loose, or I would have tangles galore by morning.

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

And this is the aftermath. I am just going to twist it and put a headband on. I really need a routine. :(

:grouphug: Awww, don't worry. As fast as we cut it, it grows right back. I've been cutting pretty continuously since I joined (scraggly, permed ends), and sometimes you just have to get past the trauma, lol, do it, and KIM (see threads below, and I actually just trimmed again ).

... and with the changing needs of hair, don't feel no kinda way about not having a reggie yet. The ladies here make it look easy, but it's harder than it sounds (as you know). PM the long-hairs, start threads asking questions, use the resource you have- there are some hair geniuses up in here. :yep:

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

I love the brick in your kitchen. :lachen:

Your hair looks really thick. Thats a good start. You've gotta PS more and more. Do you have hand in hair disease?

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

Sorry to ask such a simple question, but are you braiding your hair at night and wearing a satin sleep bonnet? Do you sleep on a satin pillowcase? Your comment about baggying causing severe tangles made me think you are sleeping with your hair unbraided... this is NOT conducive to hair retention.

From what I've read so far, other potential culprits are:

-not sufficiently keeping hair moisturized (are you going for lengths of time without caring for your hair?)

-not protecting it enough (styling and unprotected sleep = :cry3:)

-perhaps insufficient protein, though excessive protein can cause breakage too.

- insufficient vitamin and mineral intake. Do you take vitamins?

If you are interviewing then one choice you may want to consider is getting yourself a nice conservative style wig or half wig from your local BSS. Not all of them look a HAM; many look like a nice rollerset or wrap style. This will allow you the polished look for interviewing, while your hair is protected underneath.

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

I twisted it up and going to leave it alone for week. I have satin pillow cases and scarf. I don't know what happened.

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

A wig might be a good solution and cheap.lol and I and don't take any vitamins.

If you can take them, I would start taking vitamins. At the very least, I would take a multivitamin, but I personally take a multi + 1 Super B-Complex + 1 biotion (1000mcg) daily. I've endured a lot of stressful seasons over the past two years, but I think lots of prayer and these vitamins prevented me from losing my hair due to stress and illness. I also think the vitamins helped keep my growth steady and even gave me spurts at times.

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

This is great, I am having the same issues. I am going to edit the routiine and note by changes....

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

Today I picked up some coconut oil, jojobo oil and avocado oil. I am going to moisture the twist with African royale spray and seal with an oil. And maybe rewash them once a week. I also plan on picking up a multi vitamin.

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

My scalp is itching like crazy. I am going to cowash the twist in the am. When I use my henna and Alma mix I have like zero sheding. How often do you henna?

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

care free curl activator, sooo moisturizing. thats all i need, oil does nothing for my natural hair. it just sits on top of my strands. oil is not for all naturals

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

and might i add. i have been using this for two years now, it has taken me from sL to WL. three month ago i was mbl. so its been treating me good.

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

I was thinking about care free curl. Just on the strengh when I had a curl that was the longest my hair ever was lol.

Re: I just realized I have been on this site for 5 years and my hair has not really g

yup, i love care free curl, my hair is so dry without it. i dont know how the other ladies use oil. i finaly got this roller out. thats the last time ill do a rollerset. anyway i know your hair is going to do good just becuase of the care free curl.you cant go wrong

Hmmm...that might be the culprit right there. :scratchch

I don't know about any other ladies, but when I was using the African Pride Braid Spray years ago, my hair never really felt moisturized. :nono: It would feel WET (oh sure), but after it dried, my hair felt yucky, sticky, and lifeless. :ohwell:

I think you probably need a better moisturizer and a good balance between moisture and light protein. :yep:

I know one thing, when I threw away my African Pride Braid spray, and my Luster's Pink oil :barf: , and got serious about a hair care regimen, my hair started to thrive! :woot:

It can be done. Like others have said, your hair has been growing, but retention/moisture balance might be the problem.
