That my hair will continue to break if I continue to wear a bun on wet hair

My stylist (who is so into hair growth, no heat and protection) told me that some people can not wear buns all the time (wet hair) or their hair will break. She said that my hair type makes me one of those people.
frown.gif
She told me this a couple of years back, but I thought I had a grasp on the whole bun thing and just changed my method of doing the bun.

At any rate, she asked me to follow *her* method for awhile and she BETS that I will KEEP a lot if not all my growth.

So her plan is as follows...

I got my hair pressed yesterday. I am not to use anymore heat (which I never do anyways) while wearing my hair out. I can use light oil on my ends for daily protection. In a week, I am to oil my ends and either wear a loose french roll, or some other loose style. I can even wear a loose bun (since I am not wetting my hair). I am NOT to rinse/wash my hair for TWO weeks. At that point, I am to wash/deep condition/or protein conditioner and if I am going to wear my hair wet, then I am to wear it curly and out. IF I plan to wear it in a bun style, she want my to lightly blow dry my hair (making sure mid and ends are dry) and keep my ends and mid section very-oiled. Her point is that she doesn't want me to put any more pressure on my wet hair. It's cool to wear out wet/wavy but twisted with a hair restraint

One thing that made big-time sense to me is that my hi-lights I got in June 2003 are half way down my hair shaft. My hair grew about 5 inches in less than a year (no vitamins). That is about how much I cut off last month. So growth isn't my problem. She says with her method, I will see a couple keep my growth this time and experience NO BREAKAGE. And she is a big beleiver in vitamins so she said that I should see good growth by June. My current length is ((gasp)) two inches above bra-strap
frown.gif
So my goal by June is bra-strap. If I don't get two inches of healthy hair by June using her method, I am going to burn her with my curling irons!

Leejure,

It's really wonderful that you have a stylist that is this helpful with you and your hair

LOL.. don't burn her w/ your curling iron!!! My aunt is someone who has amazing growth just pressing and wearing her hair out all the time. I believe there are two ways to grow hair long. A- using daily co washes or B- weekly presses with light oiling. She may be right, just give it a try and let us know what happened.

I do not like to handle/style my hair when it's wet. I could not even imagine putting it in a bun.. It is just too fragile.....Your stylist may have a good point. I hope it works (her method), so you will not have to burn her with your curling iron....

You should be happy with your hair being 2 inches above bra-strap. I wish my hair was that long! Before I read that, I thought your was like above shoulder-length or somethin. There's no need for u to worry. Be happy with your long healthy hair

I think my hair has breakage after being in a wet bun. But Im still gonna try the ponytail method (airdrying my hair in a ponytail)

Poohbear, I remember when my hair was not quite shoulder length and I was hoping to get it to shoulder length. Then when I made it to shoulder length, I dreamed about bra-strap. Then when i made it passed bra-strap, I couldn't wait to get it to waist. I am thankful, God knows, its just all that work and WAITING only to have it snipped-off.

LisaTamika, I thought my hair loved a wet bun also. It sure looks good in a wet bun, but that mid-back breakage is a killer! I gotta do something. I am sick of getting my hair cut after working so hard on the growth!

She is so good when it comes to healthy hair.

She has long BLOND hair herself. She prides herself on "making someone's hair grow".

2 weeks manipulation free? My hair is nodding "yes"

. Styling once every 2 weeks is my plan this spring and summer. I may apply a mix of Surge and garlic extract to my scalp to boost growth and fight shedding, but I'm lazy lately. I like your stylist.

Good Luck Leejure and thanks for passing on her advice. I've been tempted to try air drying in the bun, but I broke my dry hair w/buns! Needless to say I've be apprehensive. What vitamins did she tell you to take?

Thanks for sharing that info Leejure. You'll help many ladies keep their hair from breaking when they wear buns. Your stylist sounds like a keeper!

Leejure, I know about wet bun breakage. I have to lightly blow dry and keep my ends oiled like your stylist suggested. This has worked so much better for me and washing my hair only once weekly. I see a lot less breakage. Thanks for the hair tips.

This doesn't sound too bad Leejure!!!
2 inches in a month and a half tho- I hope you make it!

Hmmm - you know this really does make sense. I've been battling breakage too. Right now I'm in braids and plan to keep it that way for the rest of the summer. I'll have to keep this in mind though when I take them down. I do realize that its the manipulation while wet that seems to be causing the most damage....

Girl, I doubt if I make it, but I am hoping to at least brush the top of my bra-strap

We'll see!

She told me to get hair and nail vitamins but didn't specify. I am currently taking the following -

MSM, Hair, Skin and Nails, Flax Seed, Multi-vitamin, and Know Gelatin drinks (which was recommended to me by a guy in a vitamin store)

YOUR STYLIST SEEMS VERY KNOWLEDGABLE!!! You sure she's not a lurker

?
I think that is great advice! Some people can wear those wet buns, while my hair hates it. I dont even feel right manipulating my hair when wet that is why I only "wash" it once a week! It took me two months on the bun challenge last year to realize my hair didnt take well to that! My hair loves rollersets and to be worn down. I keep my ends sealed with olive oil and serums and I dont use flat irons, curling irons or blowdryers.

I hope this works well for you!

Your stylist sounds awesome and I like her advice. Certainly doesn't seem harmful so giving it a try seems like a good option! Good luck!
