how can I use this? I have over 5 weeks of new growth...can I apply it to my roots and wrap with a silk scarf? I heard this is great to straighten new growth...BTW...it has NO scent at all....I heard this is a good thing...advice ladies?

Congrats on finding the coconut oil. I have seen the Nature's Vision brand and it looked like the good stuff. (It costs as much as the GOL and it looked "rich.")

I think that most of us are using it as a hot oil preshampoo treatment. Last week I mixed some of my Garden of Life coconut oil with some olive and avocado oils. I applied the mixture to damp hair, put on a plastic shower cap, and covered my head with a hot towel. I left it on for about an hour. The treatment left me with very moisturized, very soft hair. HTH

I haven't tried pure coconut oil as a hair dressing, but give it a try and let us know how it works.

I just finished misting my hair with distilled water and I applied the coconut oil to the new growth, massaged, and distributed it throughout my hair. Now I have it in a pigtail so I will let you all know how it feels/looks in the am.

AFTER YOU DO THAT... DO YOU GO ABOUT SHAMPOOING AND CONDITIONIND YOUR HAIR AS NORMAL....

Its been less than an hour and I SWEAR that my new growth is straighter! Last nite, I washed and airdried in a pigtail. When I went out today, my style was OK except my roots were puffy and thick (even my mom noticed - - she said "wow you have a lot of natural hair..."). Now Im airdrying again in a pigtail after misting w/ distilled water and applying the coconut oil to the roots and hair....what a difference....

JHIANA,

Yes, you can shampoo and condition as normal after an oil treatment.

However If I remember correctly, I just rinsed and conditioned after the oil treatment. No shampoo.

I had been out all day in the sun and my hair was really, really dry.

LL7--Congrats on your success. Let us know how your hair looks after it dries.

Wow I wish I would have known it was there since I frequent that store. I ended up getting Garden of Life at Vitaminshoppe on 92st. I applied it to my hair when it was wet after a condition wash and it softened up the new growth and it was straighter. i could have made it really straight if i would have brushed it but i am leery of brushes.

God bless you all.

I am so heated that the Jamaican store I go to for my coconut oil, no longer sells it!

I've been trying to avoid buying it online, but it looks like I have no other choice!

I think the reason why it's so hard to find coconut oil is because most people don't know the benefits to using it.

Have any of you thought of making it yourself? The woman at the store asked me why I didn't just make it myself. She told me that all it takes is boiling the coconut and the oil will rise to the top. Is this true?

coconut oil in now hard to find because of an article that came out in women's world saying that the oil was a "good" fat for cooking. so, now it's back-ordered all over!

yeah marabou1, its true, and you do get the coconut 'scent' from it, but you have to use a lot of coconuts (at least two) cut it up/ juice it so that it becomes coconut milk, and then start to boil it. The oil will float to the top after a couple of hours, and then you can skim it off the top with a spoon.

Its a bit of a bother to do this though, even for the highly dedicated.

JHIANA...it's a solid that melts at 76 degrees. Its hot in NYC now, so mine has a thin layer of oil at the top...

Thank You

OK ladies I buy my coconut oil pure and unrefined -- so it has a light coconut oil scent at the Stop & Shop supermarket it's called Jamacian Choice and it's like two dollars something for 7ozs. I guess it can be found in any neighborhood supermarket that has an ethnic section. I live in Brooklyn.

yes you can use the tinned coconut milk to extract oil - its a bit of a bother though and you may only get a couple of tablespoons per tin....
