I Have A Question about Relaxing Just The Roots...

For what reason?

Is it for something temporary? She does realize that her roots will only be straight for the amount of time it takes her hair to grow out and then she'll have natural roots, texturized middle and natural ends right?

I know i tried to tell her that, but she had really fine hair...So I'm like hmm...I told her to do it in some natural styles

What exactly is she trying to do, though?
Transitioning to a relaxer/texturizer while keeping the ends natural???

thats weird. She probably figure since the roots is the hardest to thermally straighten, she's trying to resolve that problem without loosing the thickness of her hair??? Tell her maybe she should think about relaxing just the top of her hair, and leaving the bottom half natural. So that her hair looks relaxed yet still has the thickness.... ok that sounds weird to me also...

Doesn't sound like a good idea...at all...regardless of what she's trying to do with her hair. :nono:

Yeah :ohwell:

Recherch, what exactly is your friend trying to do with just the roots? Is she just trying to lay them down or something? Maybe a good quality hair gel or butter would better help her lay down her hair . . . I wouldn't go as far as relaxer though. :perplexed

She's trying to lay them down..I think it's because all of her friends have relaxed hair and she always says how flowy our hair is, but I guess she wants to be more like us...But her hair is too fine to get a relaxer and if she does her hair will be flat and limp with no body

She can't just press the roots? There used to be a spray stuff for natural hair that would mkae it "like" relaxed hair when pressed. Even with fine hair, maybe she could just "warm comb" them.

Exactly, someone I know did this, it ended up just like you've described!

Yeah I told her about texlaxing but all she wants to do is do her roots...I don't know. She asked me today and I told what you guys said and she said so that's like a relaxed person perming their new growth and I was like my whole head is relaxed...not relaxed roots and the rest natural..

Tell her to relax her root only if she doesn't want to have hair on her head later on. The worst thing she can do is have natural ends and straight root - it would be a disaster to comb. I underprocessed my hair and when I relaxed again, the root was straighter than the ends. It was SO difficult managing the straight and underprocessed parts - I even tore my hair out while combing. Tell your friend it is not a good idea, trust me.

:perplexed  Please don't allow her around chemicals. Please.

Doesn't she know that eventually with the multiple times that she will be relaxing "just her roots" that she will have a head of fully relaxed hair? How does she not get that concept.

Today, she relaxes her roots. In 8-10 weeks, she relaxes the roots again. How far up is she going to go up. In another 8-10 weeks, she relaxes the roots again. So now she has the roots relaxed and the ends natural. Pretty soon, she's going to want to trim, but she will be trimming off the natural. And the cycle will continue. And eventually, she will be fully relaxed.

Again, what does she NOT get about this?

How will texturizing the roots give her the "flowy" hair she desires. I really don't understand how she thinks this will be work
