Recently I have been adding castor oil to my leave in conditioner. At first I really liked how it made my hair feel but after 3 days my hair gets really hard. Somehow I suspected that it may have been the Pantence conditioner that I was using. I thougth maybe it caused too much buildup but now that I have stopped using it my hair is hard again and coming out tooo much.

Is it the castor oil?

Castor oil makes my hair really soft & supple. I'm leaning towards your leave in as the culprit...

Have you clarified lately?

YOu know Supergirl, I think mabye this is what I need to do but it seems now that I am using the oil I have to clarify much more often.

really I am getting so tired of the whole hair thing. I just feel like cutting it all off. The more I learn about what hair needs the more it seems to demand of my time. It seems that there is just more and more to fine tune everything.

Does anyone else feel this way?

I want to be that child who used hair greese and water with long plaits. I bathed on the beach every day and my hair was happy for it. Now the more I know the more damage I get.

I am having a break down. I hate my hair at this moment.

PeachTree & nonie I use 911 leave in. I use to like it alot in the past and recently started to use it again.

I tried 911 and H two 0 and both of them left my hair harder than the leave-in by Aphogee. It may be the 911.

ThursdayGirl you made me laugh for one minute, because we all know how HARD Aphogee can get. LOL!!! Well in the past I found it moisturising. Maybe oil simply does not work well with my hair. I am not sure. I am wondering if anyone has this frustration with oil.

I liked it alot at first but now my hair just feels soo hard and it's breaking.

I have frustration with oil Jazz, well most oils anyway, castor oil does my hair a world of good though. Makes it super soft. I also use a lil coconut oil also, all other oils make my hair hard. Now those watery leave-ins make my hair hard too -- 911, infusium 23 and the like, so I am sticking to creamy leave-ins. I am loving africa's best liquid leave in hair mayo. It gives great slip, I also add a bit of nexxus headress, it gives body. So I say clarify and get you some creamy leave-ins. And soon enough you'll be in love with your hair again!

Jazz, I don't know much about 911 but I seem to recall someone saying they changed it...or stopped making the one she used to get?

If that's the case, could it be that the one you remember liking isn't exactly the same as the one you recently bought. I've heard of products' compositions changing (and not just hair ones) so maybe that's happened with 911. Sometimes the change isn't so obvious but it's there. And you might need to use trial and error to find out...like trying another leave-in that people are raving about to see if your hair feels better without changing your castor oil/conditioner concoction. And if you still have the problem, then you'll know it wasn't the 911. Just my $0.02.

i think you should try using just the 911 for a couple of weeks to see how it works. then use the castor oil with another of your faves to see how it works. my bet is on the castor oil. depending on which kind you have, it may be too heavy for your hair.

I hear you. I think its very easy to get sucked into the vortex (I'm over dramatizing) of hair care and products and regimes and oils and techniques etc etc etc. Its never ending.

For me, I feel I'm getting over the whole PJ thing. There are less and less things I want to try and I'm realizing that the best routines are the simplest of all. Just find what key products work for you best and stick to that. If you really want to encorporate an oil then I'd try a different one. For me, I love avocado, extra virgin olive and coconut oil (sometimes). For an 'all in one' that has alot in it already is Hot Six Oil which is light and works really nice too. But like I said, its about finding what works for YOU and sticking with it.

I like this board alot and the advice I've learn't is amazing but I'm getting back to a very simple basic routine using a few core products that I already have (and a couple that I found from this board) and that's it.

Just sharing that I understand that feeling of wanting to get back to what was simple and what worked

(especially in a place like St.Lucia. I thought of that when you mentioned the beach).

Thanks Ladies, your responses really help. When I am going through these moments I can't breath properly to even think properly.

brownrelaxedhair I think you understand this web I am feeling. Unfortunately I can't use any of the oils you suggested. So far the only one which seemed to do anything was the castor oil.

adrienne0914 I think what you said is exactly what I will do. That sound like a great idear, because in the begining the castor oil really made my hair feel sooo soft. Plus I am remembering what I have been told about it stimulation hair growth. I will try them sepeately and see how they work that will I will have an idear of which one is causing this breakage.

Finally my hair has regain the growth that I lost about two months ago and now this. It's never ending.

Question PeachTree & debyjay since you both like the castor oil how often do you use it?

I have been using it every evening after rinsing my hair.

Thanks everyone

mirrormirror I tried the jojoba oil and it was not very nice on my hair at all. It immediately turned my hair soo hard. I was quite dissapointed since everyone says it's wonderful.

A couple of years ago (or so), I tried using only oils on my hair. My hair felt hard and straw like from doing so. If I use oils on my hair, I HAVE to use something else with it or else I'll end up with hard straw like hair. My hair mainly likes oils for pre-shampoo / warm oil treatments. The watery leave-ins also make my hair hard. I stick to the creamy, thick, moisturizing leave-ins. They work out great on my hair. When I do order some Monoi Oil, I'm basically going to use it to make my hair smell extra good.

Hi Jazz Angel, although it seems you have found some potential solutions to this problem, I thought this link might be of interest to you: No Oil Routine

Thanks you sooo very much. I just read through that link and I am happy to have done so. I was begining to feel that there was something wrong with my hair. If everyone else is loving it why doesn't it work for me? It's good to have read that link.

I guess my next quest is to find a thick creamy leave in conditioner.

Thanks again ladies for saving my hair.

I feel so much better now.

jazzangel, i LOVE the Elasta QP Recovery Creme Hairdress. i use it as my leave-in. you could try that or some others that people recommend.

also, i agree with allandra. i have much more success with oils as a pre-shampoo treatment than afterwards unless they are VERY light. i do use monoi oil right before the Recovery. i put just enough to cover the palms of my hands then rub in. so maybe you can just use the oil in a different way...

Check out MotownGrl's Leave-In Conditioner. You can make it as heavy or as light as you want by your choice of conditioner and oils. Or maybe you could substitute the oil with extra glycerin or aloe vera gel or silicone drops or an anti-frizz serum.

Thanks adrienne0914 Quess what? I went back into some of the older post and noticed that you recommended it and went out yesterday to get it. Thank you!!! I do like it.

Many years ago I used Kiehl's Silk Groom as the only thing for my hair, but it just became too expensive for me. I thought it would be good to try again so I called the company for the ingredients today. It has quite a few oils. However it's very thick and creamy. My question is should I forget about it all together because of the oils?
