ive been looking through all the hair albums and i was wondering how you all do your poofs??

personally, i dont tend to comb of brush or ad too much product, i just tie it real tight with my scarf and push it back to wear i want it (thats what i did in my avatar pic)...but the front and back are never particularly smooth or shiny...

i wondered if you ladies actually have your hair in a ponytail for your poof, or if its just tied back slightly smaller than usual....and also, if you dont brush or comb, how do you get it so smooth??

Hey- just about to post pics of my puff!! Anyway, this is what I do:
After my fat two strand twists are a little ragged, I pick out my hair with the K-cutter comb. I then take my hair scarf, starting at the forehead, and while tying the scarf once in the back, I begin to smooth the scarf on the rest of my hair, until I get the puff look desired. With this method, I can tighten the scarf to make a smaller puff, or I can only smooth it halfway to make a bigger puff. I hope I explained my technique well.

hmmm...i just place the scarf/headband on my forehead and push it back...and gently tightening it as i push it back...
I dont ever brush my sides...

I can now make a pony puff, because my hair has grown past shoulder length when stretched. After I have washed/conditoned my hair, I run a leave-in through my hair. Then I use one hand to smooth the top of my hair back. I then finger comb/stretch my hair from the nape up to where the top is. This takes a while, because my hair shrinks to above shoulder length when wet. After I get an actual pony held in one hand, I then use an ouchless band to hold the pony puff. If I want, I can add a scarf for flavor. After this I smooth kemi oyl shea butter pomade over the hair line up to the puff. I wrap with a scarf and let set for 30 minutes or more. I don't mind curlies and fuzzies, but if I want a sleek look, I add a little gel before I put the scarf on.

I think the smoothness you see in pics is related to hair type and/or the tension applied. Also, possibly a good holding gel. My hairline can't take tension, and my hair doesn't naturally smooth out so my puffs are puffy all over. Gels make my hair really hard, so I avoid them.

I use a a scunci metal-free band to pull my (wet from shower) hair into a pony - sometimes my hair has been combed in the shower, sometimes not. Then I tie a scarf the whole thing for about 15 mins to take some of the volume out. Finally, I take the scarf off and gently tug more of my hair through the band to flatten it further. It comes out looking like this:

that looks really pretty cherish! i cant wait for my hair to be that long!!

at this point its not long enough to have a decent puff using the ouchless scrunchie thing....actually i think its a combo of not long hair, and huge head!

My head is pretty big too so don't worry about that. I was able to start using the bands and scrunchies from around 8", I think.

Good luck.

Shatani, have you ever tried Fantasia IC anti frizz gel? It's really good, doesn't have any mineral oil or alcohol in it. It gives a really firm hold.

I use either a goody elastic, a ring of old pantyhose or a scarf. with the scarf you bring it towards the back, tie it towards the front and keep making it tighter till a puff forms. when you get the desired height you secure it in the back. I do this on completely soaking wet hair with leave in conditioner. Once my puff is in the position i want it i add some IC gel to the hairline and brush if i want a sleeker front. for an even smoother hairline i add a scarf to the front for 10-15 min and take off. I have an example in my avatar.
