I've been admiring this $650,000 beauty from Tiffany's for months now. it's really gorgeous.

After seeing Emily from the Bachelorette get a rose gold engagement ring, I started doing some research and found a few Etsy sellers and came across this one

.

2.20 ct pink-purplish diamond set in platinum vs a 1.5 ct pink sapphire set in 14 k white and rose gold.

WOW! Well, if that isnt a darn good sub. :look: ive never heard of getting rings on etsy. Amazing.

the ring isnt my style but i would love to see other subs for high end rings!!

Being that this is an e-ring as well as a colored stone. I think there's a few things you should know and look into before purchasing.

Does the seller know if the stone has been heated? Does the seller know if the stone is B.E. Treated? These are things you should know from your seller no matter WHO they are.

Now I'll be the first to say I do not like Tiffany's because they allow all kinds of stones and basically can't tell you anything about them. However because they're a brand, the things they sell hold value, so thats something to keep in mind.

Diamonds and colored stones are not created equal, so please be sure that the seller gives you what you really want.

Sapphires are going through all types of treatments, and you have to be very careful you're not paying a lot for a stone that may be practically worthless.

Find out if the stones are treated and to what extent. The seller should know this for sure. There are now sapphires and rubies that are treated by melting glass in the frissures which is terrible indeed because its not disclosed, so please be sure this is not the type of stone you have in your ring...they are worthless stones, at that point you may as well get a lab stone.

Your seller should be able to tell you the type of treatment on your stone. If they can't tell you, thats not a stone to buy. Always insist on full disclosure.

Wow, Tiffany's usually has a pretty good price range for each setting depending on the particular stone that you buy. $650k is a lot. The dupe is nice. Neither are my style but they're pretty.

I know this is an old thread, but Arcadian, do you have any book or website suggestions when it comes to researching stones? We are looking, but don't know what to ask most of the time.

greenandchic, it depends on what type of stone you're researching. Some sites are better than others for sure. Rubies and Sapphires are the ones to be careful of. I know a lot of reputable dealers of both, however, a unheated stone of ideal color is not inexpensive. (cheaper than Tiffany's for sure though!)

Combining a stone with a setting can be tricky. Many times you may have to have the head reworked, because colored stones can be deeper than diamonds, so would need more room at the bottom of the setting.

I could put all the sites that I know of, but I'd rather narrow it down so no one gets overwhelmed.

Arcadian - Thanks for the info! I've been researching diamonds - retail, wholesale, online, brick & mortar, 4c's etc. In many ways its easier to research than other stones.

I'm curious about sapphires - I've found very little reputable info online so far.

@greenandchic

For colored stones, these are a few places that I trust (I've shopped at all of them...lol)

http://www.gemfix.com/
http://gemcal.com/
http://mastercutgems.com/
http://www.swalagemtraders.com <--- must have a login to see pricing
http://www.africagems.com/
http://artcutgems.com
http://ajsgems.com
http://litnon.com

This is only a short list I have a lot more. However each of these companies tends to have the best guarantee and will always answer questions.

For Diamonds, I would consider

http://www.jamesallen.com/
http://www.whiteflash.com/
http://goodoldgold.com/
http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/

All of them will work with your budget to find you the best possible diamond. They also have ALOT of great information about diamonds on their sites.
