Why does some people's hair thrive with lye relaxers and others with no-lye?? I just don't get it because many people have successful rates with lye and as much as they rave about it my hair gets eat up by it and loves no - lye much better. I just don't get it.

I don't know how my hair would respond to no lye. I don't recall ever using one...though its possible many, many moons ago. I never wanted to use them after I read that the calcium hydroxide (or whatever it is) leaves your cuticle open and lifted up causing more damage. It was in the book by the guy that does Oprah's hair (Andre Talks Hair). I can't remember the exact quote but that always scared me and I don't need no extra problems. lol

I wonder about this, too. I've used lye for most of my life, and my hair was always silky and straight. I switched to no-lye about six months ago and my hair seems the same, but much thicker. I thought the thickness came from the care I've been giving my hair since I found the hair care forums on May 2006, but I could be wrong.

but what's crazy and amazing is that there are people who can do both!!

my hair gets eat up by lye maybe because i'm fine haired. i notice a lot of finehaired ladies are doing no-lye.
