I've been moisturizing my hair with a water based leave-in conditoner & a conditioner then sealing it with oil.

My hair gets damp after that but when my hair dries again it gets really DRY.

Are my products bad.. or is this technique just bad for my hair?

I do it in sections and I have relaxed hair.
 
Maybe, your moisture and protein balance is off. The moisture and seal thing wasn't working for me until I realized I needed some protein and after used some PC. I would do an assessment.

That is a very Good Observation. You will have to bring your Protein & Moisture into "Balance." I always try to analyze the Product I am using to ensure that I have a Healthy Balance of Protein & Moisture.

And Moisture should always follows Protein.:yep:

Porosity Control is also a good product to help put your Hair in Check. My bringing the ph Levels of your hair in balance and sealing/closing the cuticle and locking in the moisture into your hair.

I would also Clarify my Hair to remove "Product Buildup" So you can start over with a Clean Slate (of Hair). You probably have alot buildup on your hair.:look:

Then I would proceed with my Moisturizing and Seal.:yep:
 
^^^ ITA w/balancing protein with moisture. Also, how much product are you using? I also use two products: NTM (quarter size amount) and LTR (dime size on ends only) and I seal with jojoba on the length of my hair and with castor oil sealing the ends, temples, and hairline. For my relaxed hair, too much product does make my hair hard and crunchy. Could too much product be the problem?
 
I use Mango Butter and then seal. The product is soft and it doesn't leave my hair dry at all. Give it a try.
 
Clarifyyyyy! This happened to me a couple weeks ago because I hadn't used any shampoo for about 6 weeks (I wash my hair once a week). Co-washing is great but I have to remember to clarify after the 5th week.
 
My fine strands hate oil. I spritz with rose h20 and seal with NTM silk touch. The most that I can get away with is one drop of coconut oil for my entire head.

Pay attention to what happens when you do and don't seal with oil.
 
I think clarifying is the first step needed. After i clarified and added an egg to my conditioner it was alot softer..I also started adding melted unsalted butter with my kera care and my hair is the softest its ever been (and moisturized). I battle with dry hair and often the moisture + seal thing doesnt work for me but i am noticing natural products my hair likes..the stuff in the stores my hair hates.

(Clairifying is using a STRONG shampoo.. right?)

My regimen:
wash once every 2 weeks. (shampoo & conditioner)
DC
airdry
moisturize & seal every day
bantu knot- wear it down
oil scalp

How would I go about adding more protein?
(some of the products I use say that they have protein in the ingredient list)
I think I need more moisture.. my hair feels so dry.
But it's not weak..

I think I am using too much product because my hair feels really damp after I moisturize and seal.
I use so much to get it not to be dry though.

Yep, that's all I use. I usually put it in every 3-4 days (not daily). Then I seal with coconut oil or olive oil. Daily for my hair would be too much. There is a BSS near my parents' home that carries it. I haven't found it in any Sally's or drugstore. So I get 2 jar when I run out.

It might be those products you're using. You need a good, official moisturizer. What actual products do you use in your regimen? What deep conditioner, shampoo, etc?

A clarifying shampoo is actually a clarifying shampoo. Not sure what a 'strong' shampoo is.
 
Your wet hair just may not tolerate oils. My hair (relaxed and natural) is the same way with the exception of coconut and castor oils. Those are the only two oils that I can use on my wet/damp hair and not have my hair be crispy and hard when it dries.
 
Mercie: Are you moisturizing and sealing on dry hair? When I was doing that, my hair was so hard and dry the next day and the shedding was outrageous. When I started CO washing or just rinsing, then moisturizing and sealing, no more dry or hard hair. The shedding stopped and I started retaining length.

what the name of the product? im really struggling with dry hair right now:perplexed
 
What type of relaxer do you get. I just discovered that no lye relaxer is the reason my hair has been so dry lately. I am switching back to lye on my next relaxer. No matter what i do, my hair is still dry.

I use the conditioner to DC too.

ohh.. I thought a clarifying shampoo was anything that has ammonium lauryl sulfate in it. Since it's a harsh detergent.

Yea.. I really need to find a good moisturizer.

Ok, the ORS Aloe is a clarifier, chelator, and neutralizer. Basically, it super deep cleans the hair and can leave it dry dry dry. And your conditioner, while ok, isn't enough to replace all the moisture you lose by using the aloe shampoo. And then, your moisturizers aren't very good, IMO.

So you need...
1. Gentle shampoo that will clean your hair without stripping it. I can't think of one off the top of my head, but do a search for "moisturizing shampoo" and lots of threads will come up. Only use the ORS aloe when you NEED to clarify, chelate, or neutralize.

2. A real deep conditioner. You need something formulated for deep conditioning that can help replenish the moisture in your hair and have long lasting effects. I suggest Aubrey Organics White Camellia conditioner. I love love love it. But there are lots to choose from so you can do a search for that as well.

Once you have a good deep conditioner, I suggest you up your dc'ing to once a week. Moisture really starts with your deep conditioner, so you have to set a good base level of moisture before you do anything else. It may take a few months to see all the benefits of DC'ing often, but believe me your hair will thank you for it.

3. Moisturizer will build on the foundation you've set with your DC. It's important that you find one that fits your specific needs for your hair and your styling. Again, you'll have to do a search. But, you should avoid products that will contribute to dryness or buildup like silicones, mineral oil, petroleum (paraffin), and lots of chemicals that are just fillers but add no real benefit to the hair.

Personally, I use my AO White camellia to moisturize. But it may be too heavy and oily for you to leave it in your hair (I'm a natural 4a/b). You'll really just have to search this one out. Some people use V05 conditioners to moisturize (specifically moisture milks). You could also use a moisturizing spray and then seal with a butter like elasta qp mango butter or jane carter nourish & shine. Another good line that could work for you is Aussie Moist. I've heard the shampoo is pretty good, the 3 min miracle is a good dc, and lots of people use the aussie moist conditioner as a moisturizer.

Oh and if you wanted to add a protein in there (always to be used before you DC), you could try the aphogee 2 min or aubrey gpb.

You may want to forgo the sealing with oil for now. Start with the basics, and keep track of what worked and what didn't. Just make sure you research ingredients so that you aren't using things that are drying out your hair unknowingly.

Elasta QP Mango Butter. If you do a "search" for it, a lot of women used to rave about it back in the day, so there should be a few threads about it. I love it. I get moisture from it, but it doesn't weigh my hair down at all.

How many times have you cowashed before, and what did you use to do it? If you haven't tried it before, I say try, especially since you're suffering from dryness. I'm co-signing with msa that the Creamy Aloe shampoo is not what you want to be using every time you wash. I use the original CON, I've heard that Elasta and Elucence make great gentle shampoos as well. I also agree that your DCing needs to be stepped up to at least once a week, twice if you can. I use Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose, White Camellia, GPB and Island Naturals (I'm a serious PJ :lachen:). They're all natural, last a long time, and penetrate well. I also don't care for your moisturizers, but I'll leave those to relaxed ladies to assist you, as I'm natural and use fairly heavy products on my hair. Good luck!
