I Didn't Know Not Giving A Cash Wedding Gift Was A Thing In The South.

I'm reading a wedding thread on another board and the responses have been quite interesting, there were some people that got back $30K+in cash gifts and few others said it was taboo in their area and got mainly gifts from their registry.

How much did you get in cash wedding gifts?

I tend to give cash gifts ranging from $150-200.

I got over 10K in cash gifts and got a fair amount off my registry. Nowadays I give around 225-250 for us as a couple at a local wedding. If we travel, I adjust accordingly. Depending on the person, I give a gift off the registry. My coworker said she found cash gifts impersonal and gave me a gift off my registry. For her wedding, I bought her a gift. For gifts off registry, at least a 100+ gift.

I like that I got a mix of cash and gifts for the home. Like we used a lot of the cash for honeymoon and to replenish what we spent on the wedding. With the items I still have them and still think "Oh so and so gave us this" when I see them.

But I'm kinda confused.. I thought the shower gift and wedding cash gifts* were two different things?

*obviously we all know that people do what they want with their money.

Is it tacky to request monetary gifts only. We received an invitation to a wedding and this was in bold letters at bottom of invite.
I've been married for a while.. I may have missed something

It is still considered tacky to make such a request. If you have no registry, and especially if you are not young or coming straight from your parents' homes, most people will generally give money anyway - no need to ask.
