I cant tell you how scared I was.

I have been so excited, I brought a hood dryer from one of the ladies on this site. It was so good of her to post all the way from the US to UK.
Soon as I came I decided to wash my hair.

I was ready and got under the dryer with it on my bed and me underneath. It was great 1800W dryer for the first time.

Anyway I was underneath for about 5 mins, as you know its noisy underthere, I was home alone, and my bed was the tidest so there were clothes draped around, underneath the dryer.

I started to get really hot, I just thought it was the 1800W.

Anyway I decided that I would take a quick break from underneath, I got up and, the dryer was smoking, the heater on the dryer was orange hot and the towel draped near had started to catch fire. But beacuse it was wet didnt really catch.

Then I heard a loud BANG :Flahsssss The dryer blow up.

I just could believe what could have really happen, I would have been burnt to death or burnt the house down. What if I was still under there:eek:
This happened because of the different voltage between US/UK I brought a plug adapter but this still happened.

I have to thank god that I survived to tell the tale.

I'm so sorry that happened to you, I bought a hair straightener in the US once to use at home in the UK but when my boyfriend saw it he strictly forbid me to even try and use it (he has a degree in electrics) because of the different voltage. Its good to hear your okay

wow, Sorry to hear that.

This is a little strange and I feel it was a faulty dryer. :ohwell:

I have so many electrical equipment from the U.S.A and have never experienced

anything like this.

Thank the lord you are still here.

Thank you, Jesus that you are ok! The same thing almost happened to me, except with the fire. I have been airdrying ever since.

Kind of OT: I told my choir member that it happened to me and she gave me the surprise of my life: I found out that she was a hair stylist. Since she was moving her shop to a new location, she offered to sell me one of her hair dryers. :) How sweet.

Ladies,

Thank You, I was quite shaken up by this.
Thanks for your kind words. I will not be trying to replace my 1200W for anything else again.
It may take longer but at least it wont kill me

Kizzy, I'm glad to hear you are o.k., an angel was definately looking out for you.
I had no idea the voltage difference between our two countries could cause that to happen! Sorry about the dryer.

OMG! I bought a soft bonnet for my trip to India, and it won't work here at all. I guess it was for the best.

I am sorry this happened to you. Thank God you're alright.

Yes, you had the luck of the Irish right there!

About half of the electrical appliances in the US are also equipped for the European market while most of the European are equipped for the American market. It's usually stated on the box.

The same thing happened to me a few years back when I purchased an old fashioned hot comb in the UK, imported from the US. Once home in Sweden I plugged it in, and left the room while it was heating.
When I can back it had melted into a steaming heap on my bathroom counter.

I was so disappointed.

wow! im so glad your ok! i use my miniglide here in the uk and its fine i was planning on buying the maxi but im not so sure now WHY ohh WHY dont they make maxiglides for the uk market too?

I am very sorry to hear this happened to you. At least you know someone was watching over you and kept you from harm.

I'm sorry to hear this happened. We definitely know God is out there watching over and protecting us from all sorts of harm and danger.

Thank God your okay, may I ask what brand dryer it was? because my Gold-N-Hot hooded dryer just burned out the other day, I plugged it up and it started smelling like hair was burning or something, then the sucker just stopped and wouldn't come back on. I went to Sally's this weekend and spoke to one of the sales girls and she said that G&H appliances always burn out like that and try to find a Conair one, but I don't even know if conair makes hooded dryers, :ohwell: , I would love to have my Little Daisy back, :look: , lasted me over 10yrs until i knocked it over and the neck snapped off.

I'm glad your ok. I had a hooded dryer to malfunction and started smoking about 2 months ago. You have to be carefull with those hooded dryers.

I've had my Little Daisy since early 1998.

You need to get a transformer unless the goods are dual voltage.
Plug adapters only change the shape of the plug NOT the voltage.

I'm so sorry to hear that sweetie, that sounds traumatic. But i am so thankful you are okay. And thank you for sharing your story...i know there will be plenty of newbies on these boards and will find read what happened to you and will know to be careful. You are saving someone's life/house...

Whoa, thats scary

I've also heard you aren't supposed to place hooded dryers on soft surfaces like beds, pillows, and carpet b/c of the risk for fire and overheating. You should always operate them on a hard, flat surface like a counter or table. Your bed and clothes under and around the dryer may have facilitated the burnout too. :(

You are one lucky sista! :yep:

Amen to that! Your story is helping others. Thank You GOD, that you are Okay!!!

Well good (not what happened, but that it's a golden hot) because I just called a # Sally's gave me, and I told them what happened and that I didn't have the receipt or box, and I gave them the info. they needed and I just had to mail them a check or money order for $7.50 (for shipping) and 3inched of the cord (I guess so they can make sure you aren't trying to get a freebie) and there gonna send me a new one, , so I hope you still have the thing so you can call this # 1-800-557-9463, I had to hold on for about 5 min. but it's worth it.
Oh yeah, I wouldn't mention that I bought it off someone else, because they may use that as an excuse not to replace it.
