I can't do buns anymore...

The middle of my hair is breaking. I've been doing braid-outs and such for the last couple of months because of the bun breakage. Pulling my hair back into a ponytail was making it snap so I am giving it a break. My concern is retaining my ends.

What are you guys using to protect ends on natural hair?

I've been keeping it moisturized with a variety of custom blends like Jamaican castor oil, coconut oil, olive oil and jojoba. I got lazy braiding my hair every night but I'm back to doing that because it's helpful with growth. I'm about to move to a warmer climate and want to be sure my hair stays healthy while it grows...

I try to move the ponytail around so its never in the same place all the time (ex: high ponytails, low, in the middle, to the side). This seems to help. You might want to give that a try.

To protect my natural hair at night I braid my hair into one ponytail (no elastic bands to hold the ponytail in place) and then put on a satin cap. I also add some kind of oil or butter to the ends right before I do this. Sometimes I will tuck that braided ponytail under so that it doesn't brush up against the pillow.
HTH!

I'll try that. I've done some side buns too but there's just that one middle part that's kinda brassy, and not curly like the rest of my hair...I've been applying a cayenne pepper, castor oil and rosemary blend to those parts nightly.

Oh my goodness! My hair does the same exact thing: breakage in the middle and difference in texture. I've been bunning again, and I've been moving my bun around and combing it out damp every day. So far no tangles. What is that mix of cayenne pepper, castor oil, and rosemary supposed to do?

I second moving the bun around on your head, also try pinned up styles this way you don't have to secure your hair as tightly.

The rosemary, cayenne, castor oil blend stimulates growth in spots where there's breakage or thinning. My hair is slightly thinner in that middle part. I just co-washed now I have it in two plaits. I've been using different remedies and wearing it naturally curly. I will have in straightened once this month and then once in August. But since I'm getting married next year I want it to be as long as possible.

I use hair zingers to make ponytails and buns this way there is NO tension around my pony tail.

Here is a pic with my ends tucked under!
