Blow dry and flatiron my natural hair straight, twice a week, every week for decades. With no heat protectant, no DC, no leave in, no nothing. Then, because I was bored, put blond and brown hi-lites in my already tortured hair.

Whew, chile. Thank God for LHCF.
 
-slather my hair in pink lotion
-Use that grey glue to glue tracks in my hair
-Have the nerve to try and flat iron my "leave out" as to blend in with that shiny, horsey, weave
-Not wash my hair for months at a time
-Curl my hair every damn day with no moisturizer or heat protectant
-Shave back my edges to wear full lace wigs
 
Oh this thread is so much fun! :)

I can't believe I used to...
Leave my sew-in weaves in 3 months at a time.
Avoid exercising until I had a weave installed.
Sleep on a cotton pillow case with uncovered hair.
Oil my scalp with Doo-Grow oil since everyone else was using it.
Pin down the bangs of my sew-ins when they started to lift.

So many offenses. Lol
 
I can't believe i used to...
=> think pink oil was the alpha and omega
=> Never ever take responsibility for my hair I was always looking for someone to do it for me, and as long as they would i wouldn't question it
=> be doing the mostest all the time. Leaping for the next quick fix. just because someone says its good for hair doesn't mean it is. Even if it is good for hair is it good for MY hair? and even if it is good for my hair do i need it?
=> never use protein. i don't even understand how i had any hair without regular protein.
=> comb my hair the way i did. dragging, pulling and ripping the comb through my hair.
=> think massive hair balls post-detangling were the norm.
=> ignore the little strands and tiny coils and balls of hair that must have been EVERYWHERE
=> wool hats and cotton bandanas , the lint guys, THE LINT :nono:

The most important thing this site has taught me in the short time i've been on it is, be gentle with your hair, and constantly question your hair care practices. if they don't stand up to questioning you're probably doing too much or not enough.
 
Again following after LHCF, I bought some "oil" at the local Indian market that was in the hair aisle - couldn't read a word on the label abut it was a dark oil in a small bottle.

Took it home and tried to oil rinse in the shower not realizing this shisss was mentholated and it got in my eyes.I really thought I needed to be rushed to the hospital (no way I could drive myself) before my eyes finally clamed down and stopped burning.

Still have no idea what this oil was! Lesson learned - English only products! :/

think that I needed a relaxer
grit my teeth and hold back tears so that the root to tip relaxer could stay on a little longer :nono:
think that a little scalp burn was a necessary evil of having nice hair
use a curling iron on my bangs and burn my forehead almost. every. morning (I'm glad those scars faded :blush:)
go a month between washing my hair
not know what a moisturizer or leave-in was
get cornrows and braids that were so tight that they initially hurt to sleep on
have to let my mom blowdry my hair which meant: highest temperature, highest speed, smoking hair, fire plus teeth in my scalp, teeth of the comb attachment in my hair or on the floor, and several broken comb attachments :nono:

. . . and my mom wonders why I won't let her anywhere near my hair now :rolleyes:

omg yes! My future daughter should be grateful I'm learning what I'm learning about hair. And she will NEVER get a relaxer.
 
let a beautician put a super strength relaxer in my head ---- it was brutal
-used to wait b/n 2 to 3 weeks for a hair apt instead of washing my own hair
-would spend $100+ on braids to wear just for 2 weeks.( my scalp hates fake hair)
-have a jheri curl which ruined my hair back in the 80's

-get a relaxer every 4 weeks
-go to a salon bi-weekly and pay them to jack up my hair (so glad to be a DIY'er)
-think relaxer stretching was a pipe dream
-believe in good hair/bad hair
-think only straighter hair types could grow long hair
-carry a portable curling iron and use it at school several times a day everyday. No heat protectant, dirty hair and all....
-use a brush
-use a crimper for the wavy look
-look at all the broken hairs in my sink every morning and think it was normal. :nono:

tiffers - Girl, it was the 80s and I was in high school. What can I say? :grin:

Funny thing is I had a head full of hair! Gotta love the power of youth! :drunk:
 
I can't believe I:
-never used moisturizer
-flat ironed my hair every day without heat protectant, and would use vasaline to force my raggedy ends straight :blush:

I'm so glad I've come out of that phase where I thought my hair needed to be straight to be pretty to me. I love my curly hair now and wouldn't trade its versatility for anything!
 
- sleep in those hard plastic rollers all over my head :nono:
- shampoo the heck out of my hair on wash days. Conditioner was optional :nono: So my shampoo bottles would run out three times quicker than the matching conditioner.
- use pink lotion, 911 oil creme, african pride hair grease, gel
- wear tiiiight hair-ripping scrunchies for my pony tails
- wear scarves made of cotton to bed
- accept relaxer chemical burns on my scalp as a necessary evil
- think my sl-Apl hair was the ish. And sooo long :lol:
- think thick hair was a curse. I longed for thin hair so my pony tails could lay flatter on my head. Dumb--I know.

Right!!! I have fantasized about how amazing my future daughter(s) hair regimen will be. I can't imagine putting a child through the crap I and so many others have gone through. She's going to be so lucky and not even know it! :lol:
 
This is fun, let me take a walk down memory lane with you all. I can't believe I used to...

take down my braid extensions on a Friday, then proceed to get my hair washed and relaxed the very next day cause I gotta look presentable at all cost -- sore scalp, broken off hair, painful detangling be damned.:nono:

think it was perfectly acceptable to arrive at a salon on time for my appt then be content to wait hours upon hours upon hours until my stylist was ready to do my hair. I want all those wasted hours back. :lol:

wash my 4b hair like I was those girls in the hair commercials, lots of sudsy, harsh sulfate shampoos, plus rubbing and smooshing my hair in a loose state.:look:

think kinky, curly textured hair was the debil.:blush:

-Use the crimping iron (the small crimps) on high heat with no heat protectant. This was 1992 and knew nothing about that. :lol:

-Use a curling iron daily with no heat protectant because I wanted fresh curls daily.

-Use spritz + hot curling iron in my hair go get those hard, crispy curls of the 1990s.

-Color (highlights), henna and press my hair in the same week - again, 90s.

-Never deep condition. Conditioner would probably be on my hair for maybe a minute.

-Let the ladies at the "African braid shop" cut my hair up the shaft of the braid or use a lighter to burn off my hair to look presentable.

-Let the braiders rake though my hair because "it was so long", or because "you have a lot of hair". My hair was about APL at the time.

-While in swimming lessons, use the worst, cheapest shampoo to wash my hair and generic conditioner.

-Trim my hair with the same household scissorsI used to cut paper with.

I don't know how my hair was that long with all of the abuse I did to it.

ETA:

-Sleep with a cotton scarf.

-Use Lets Jam! and press my hair with it.

-Never fully detangle my hair until I ended up with locks.

I can't believe I
*use to go weeks without touching my hair...meaning moisturizing, washing...and sometimes i wouldnt even take it out of a pony tail.

Believe my hair couldn't grow
Grease my scalp
Relax my hair
Not wash my hair often because I believed water was bad for black folks.
Use stiff stuff w/. Curling iron

Get my phony pony with the black gel,sprintz and the blow drier
Relaxed my hair root to tip
Allowed the relaxer stay on til it burned (sometimes it wouldn't burn so it stayed on for 30mins-1hour)
Get my relaxer combed through with a rattail comb
Never moistured
Greased my scalp because it said it would make my hair grow
Had terrible breakage from my terribly dry hair so I'd use products that promised to stop breakage (protein) and that would be it not knowing that I needed moisture after-ending up with even more breakage
Never deep conditioned
Blow dry my hair on high heat and violently rake my hair with the attached comb without detangling first and with no leave-in or heat protectant and wonder why half my hair was behind me on the bathroom wall...
Omg..smh. I didn't know any better yall
