I am so SICK of hearing....

Today,

In my car I was listening to 96.3, the Michael Baisden show. Now I don't know if he had just started his show or what, but as soon as the song went off, cuz I was jamming to some ol' skool, all I heard - loud and ringing in my ear was -

42% of Black Women have NEVER been ...yadda yadda

...of course I turned the station immediately and I'm sure you know the rest, as it has been ingrained into us since our senior year of university.

My question has always been twofold:

Who comes up with these statistics? and
Why?

I never understood what the point was.

I would still be doing the exact same thing I'm doing now if I didn't know that little tidbit of information. Is its purpose to make me scared, to give up and except being lonely? I'm I supposed to run out and find a man - any man, good or bad, so not to count myself apart of that number.

Is its purpose to say to those women that do have men, regardless of how they treat them, to be grateful that they are not apart of that number.

Please someone enlighten me.

And why is it that I never hear ... 37% of white women - or - 53% of Hispanic women - or - 29% of Asian women - -and yes I made those numbers up - - but is it because I simply do not listen to those markets for other women, and they are in fact bombarded with the same idiotic numbers that we are? And what about MEN - I don't ever hear anything about the number of black men who will never, have never married.

UGHH - It just annoys me to no end...I just had to vent.

I know. It's disgusting. Who does this? People who systematically attempt to prove their superiority. If they were actually superior, they wouldn't need statistics nor comparisons. No one else would be of import and they'd be on their own large continent minding their own business.

I wonder about this, too, and not just for Black men. I look around and say how come they don't talk about how many men have not had an actual date in the last 12 years or which is more likely, being hit by lightning or Chucky Couch Potato finding a mate?

I believe there is an underlying negative purpose for broadcasting this 'statistic' and you are surely right, what is the real purpose its suppose to serve? It's one thing to have statistics on education, statistics on health matters..but MARRIAGE? It's pretty ridiculous.

All they are is statistics. People must remember that statistics are not always PROOF and most of the time are biased in some way. You always have to look at the source of the statistic and the facts it's based on. That's why I get mad every time I hear about some statistic about black people.

I feel you. And as far as I'm concerned, they could have asked one hundred 20 year old black females if they have ever been married. In that case, of course you would come out with a high percentage of "black women" who have never been married.

Those statistics mean nothing to me because I don't know the background of the people used in their little study. All I know is that my 2 cents were not included in their study, so there is no way possible anything in it could pertain to me.

Im just soo tried of hearing the negatives about black women...seriously...isnt there anything positive to report, ever??? ..Ok we NEVER/DON'T...etc etc BUT what about what the positives???

I agree. You never hear about the black women who have their own businesses or going to school or doing community work. Every time I hear something its always the black women have more diseases than everybody or we have more single parent homes than everybody. I get tired of listening to my sisters being torn down every time I turn around. Not all black women are the same yet they lump us all into the same category. That is one reason why I stopped reading some black authors because the black women they create in their novels are always gold diggers or ghetto or vengeful. I am willing to bet 95% of us have our games tight why can't the rest of the world stop hopping on black women and start giving us props?

ITA, I have never heard those stats cited for other races -don't believe the hype that every white woman is happily married.

I have "a chicken-and-the-egg type" question which come first:

The high rate of unavailable BLACK men (in jail or gay) or the high rate of single BLACK women?

Not that it really matters..........but when people (esp. Black men) try to use this stat in a "something must be wrong with you because you are still single" kind of way.....I'm always tempted to chime in with Black women would be fine if they expanded the pool (to include non-Black) of men that they date, but many for still waiting for that good "brother" to come along!
