After 19 months of transitioning, i fell off the wagon and got my hair texturized today. I basically prefer straighter (not bone straight, hate those) hairstyles and I really lacked creativity in terms of styling my natural hair. I was very afraid to put chemicals in my hair again after having bad relaxer experience 2 years ago. I am still nervous about the whole thing but I plan on being extra careful and taking good care of my hair. I have never had a teturizer before and the fear of the unknown has me a little anxious. I plan on wetsetting my hair and wearing it in protective style 90% of the time. I plan on flat ironing it for straight style only on special occassions and no more than 2 x every 6- 8 weeks or so. I plan on getting a touch up every 4 months. I pray that everything goes well because lord knows, I just don't want any more hair drama. Does this sound like a good plan, all those out there that texturize?

Re: I am so longer transitioning

deb,

I think your proposed regime sounds WONDERFUL. When you had the bad relaxer - how did your hair respond?

I think that sounds like a wonderful plan.

I'm sure your hair will thrive. What happened with the bad relaxer? What type did you use?

Re: I am so longer transitioning

Do what ever is best for your hair. I think your plan sounds like a good one. Are going to go to a professional or are you going to do it yourself? What type of relaxer were you thinking about using?

Thanks all. I got it professionally done with design essentials mild relaxer. When I previously got the bad relaxer, the beautician overprocessed, pulled it threw to the ends and my hair was a mess. There was a a section in the back that broke off to less than a half inch. That section of hair is now 8 inches long. Prior to that relaxer experience, I had had no major relaxer damage. However I had not had major growth over the less few years with the relaxer either because I think I was getting them to frequently and not properly knowing how to take care of my hair. I feel a lot more empowered after transitioning because in my mind so many of my former myths have been dispelled. Such as you have to get a relaxer every 6-8 weeks or you will have major breakage. I know that I can go at least 4-5 months without a touch up before my hair will seriously start to tangle. After that period it becomes a real challenge. Also I learned while transiitioninng that my hair grows slowly, only about a half inch a month so I must be extra carefukl to hold on to it. Right now I love the way my hair looks. I am going to try to take some pictures because it will probably be a long while before I wear it down again. I have learned so much from this board. Thank u all for all your help. Oh yeah, I want to learn how to do the touch up myself because I really don't trust hair professionals at all, but I will have to see. I actually brought the relaxer (elucence mild) to apply my own texturizer but it the end, I chickened out and went to a salon and had it done professionally. I wish i could do it myself!

Doing your own hair takes patience, knowledge and practice. The 3 go hand in hand, IMO. You'll learn how to do your own hair. Be sure to follow the instructions and trust yourself. Either way, just be sure that you take good care of your hair.

How do you go from a relaxer to a texturizer? Is this possible. If so I may want to give it a try. I never liked my hair to be super straight.

@deborah11 We are in the same boat. After six months of transitioning, I will be getting a relaxer too.

I cannot wait to see all of the growth that I have accumulated. Your regimen sounds great

. I am with you on knowing that you could stretch your relaxers. I was told to retouch at three months but transitioning for as long as I did lets me know that I could go for maybe four or even five, if I treat my hair with extra TLC.

@Lee This site has a lot of good information on texturizing:

Deborah11,
I'm texturized and I do my touch ups myself. I don't do them that often. I often wear my hair straight, even though lately I've been wearing it curly. If you'd like I can give you some tips to doing your own touch ups.

Do you think you could give me some tips on doing my own texturizer?

Tai, I would love tips on doing my own texturizer if you would be son kind as to provide them to me. Thanks. Lee for me I transitioned for 19 months and gradually cut off some of the relaxed hair. I also sustained some breakage especially during months 7-11 when tangles were very bad. After that it got much bettter and by the end of my transition, I could detangle my hair in 15 minutes because tangles were not that bad. By end of my transition I had between 7-8.5 inches of natural hair. My hair grows slowly. In some places, i still have relaxed ends up to 6 inches so I still have to be careful with combing. I plan on gradually cuting off those relaxed ends but I never did the big chop. I plan on touching up only 2-3 times per year. Chichi, thanks for the info and good luck with your relaxer.
