Hey ladies

I really need some serious help or I'm going to lose my hair and my dang mind.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 8 years ago. I take medicine everyday and it definitely stops me from being sick. But I'm getting a real bad case of some of the other symptoms such as dry hair. My ends are so incredibly dry.

Yesterday I rinsed out ORS Replenishing Conditioner after a day and a half. My hair felt like silk and then when it dried my ends were horrible again.

Ladies help... please

If it's a side effect, I don't think there's much you can do about it. Maybe, talk to your doctor about it. He/she may have a solution.

Someone with Hypothyroidism correct me if i'm wrong.

A close friend of mine has this condition and had the same issues with her hair. I read a few threads on here trying to help her with her hair. One thing that has helped her is using s curl and doing the baggy method. She also has a good vitamin regimen.
Do you moisturize and seal your hair?

The above post is right. I have this too. The B complete vitamins are very important. Becsause of the sleepyness, fatigue, and weight gain. I had to change my diet, to only chicken, turkey, and fish. I had to DC my hair every two or three days. Just to retain moisture. And with every Dc I have to do a hard core protien treatment, so that my hair can retain the moisture. For more detailed infor here is my fotki page. That way u can see for ur self exactly which, vitamins, dc, moisturizers and so on. HTH

OP, I don't know what your regimen is like but do you use shampoo to wash your hair? Perhaps just using an ultra moisturizing conditioner to wash your hair might help?

I have hypothyroidism to. I've just found somethings that work for me.

Hairveda whipped gelly - I use just a few times a week
Shescentit Marshmallow creme - daily moisturizer

I also use Shescentit products when I wash my hair and for the fist time my hair was soft, no tangles and no knots. For my washes:

Shescentit

Okra Reconstructor

Olive & Orange Cond
Honey Rinse (I use these together)

I hope this helps

Thank you ladies so much.
@Steffie, I moisturize and seal when I do my co-washes. Other than that, I try to moisturize everyday, I dont seal everyday though.

@Prayin, I too only eat chicken, turkey and fish. But that's because beef makes me incredibly ill for some strange reason. Thank you for the link to your Fotki, I am going to look in a sec.

@Vashti, I dont use shampoo at all. Well once a month I do or sometimes I only use it when I relax. Other than that, I only cowash.

@toyia, thank you so much for the suggestions.

I have hypothyroidism as well. I moisturize twice a day using a glycerin based moisturizer. I also take a kelp supplement (which is recommended for those of us with the condition) and I found that sealing my ends with coconut oil usually helps to "trap" the moisture into my hair.

http://www.thyroid-info.com/topdrs/

I have .001 percent active thyroid without treatment. My thyroid is for all intents and purposes "dead" according to my doc and that I will have to take medicine forever or "I will die". Docs words when I was hospitalized because my body went into shock from having so little hormone and my cardiac enzymes rose causing all kinds of problems from one tiny little organ (thyroid).Basically kelp or iodine supplements won't help as they are used to "stimulate" the thyroid and I don't have one. So I have to supplement it through medication. Yes if you still have a thyroid these supplements (natural) will help to encourage your natural thyroid by stimulating it to make more hormone. If you've been given radioactive iodine, I think you have to go another route as it's a more serious for of thyroid disfunction which can result in unfortunate situations and/or death. In addition to hair stuff...it's a lot to think about.

Regardless of the extent of your situation, it is imperative that you find a doc up to date on the newest treatments. This link shows docs in your area, with reviews from patients. Find one with stellar reviews and see if you see the words "cytomel" or armour" by them. I am now treated with synthroid but was given cytomel also. Doc also says if I don't feel improved enough we'll switch to armour. Not all docs are up to date (like europe) and don't read the newest journals. Few give out cytomel and will say you don't need it.. I have graves disease, given radioactive iodine, and went hypo. Took synthroid for years a nd still felt like the walking dead and also super dry hair. Took me finding a doc who used cytomel and armour and I feel a lot better. Still fatigued but it's improved, and so is my skin, and my hair.

Other than that I use plenty of moisturizing conditioners. Because I'm natural I don't use protein moisturizers. I'm sure you can adjust according to your hair. But basically my hair craves moisture. I did a bc after graves ravaged my hair and went to mbl, cut out layers went to shoulder last year, and am now back to mbl. So I know that this has helped at retaining. I can only speak for me. But I know without all the moisture, my hair would shatter (thyroid disease is no joke). Silk elements conditioning treatment. I leave it in over night (along with coconut oil) and then I rinse it out *(conditioner wash it out). Only use shampoo now ever four shampoos to make sure my hair is clarified. I also only do my hair once a week or every two weeks (and use dry conditioner on scalp in between if I'm not in breads). Low manipulation helps in our condition. I also leave some silk elements conditioning treatment in and seal with oil to help with moisture balance. HTH! If you can prepoo for a day, the more the merrier. I try to put it on the day before, braid my hair and really let it sink in. I then wash with the silk elements conditioner the next day to wash out the conditioner (ha! more moisture) sort of co washing it out, focusing on getting the water on the scalp to get it clean. HTH and good luck.

You should check out Underground Wellness

Here is a really awesome podcast/radio show. I've read that there are a bunch of things you can do Nutritionally to help you with thyroid problems/symptoms. I didn't even know that gluten can negatively effect your thyroid.

I like to play these while I'm doing chores. Sorry I couldn't help directly, but I hope that you can find something useful in the video or on the radio show. I hope you are successful figuring out how to keep your hair moisturized.

I suffer from Hypo also.6 years ago I had to have my thyroid gland taken out due to cancer and its been an uphill struggle at times, regarding weight, hair, energy, etc. You've gotten really good advice so far.I am just not beginning my hhj but I can tell you baggying under a lacefront helps my ends tremendously.I am currently looking another doc myself to prescribe something other than Synthroid.........Good luck! Also,to the other poster, what is the purpose of the kelp exactly?thsk

^^^Check out that link that I listed in this thread above. It lists doctors in every state, and tells you ones that come highly recommended. In the notes section it even tells if they're more traditional or up to date and prescribe armour or cytomel.

I don't know much about the condition but instead of focusing on the outside focus more on the inside. Meaning, take vitamins and supplements for your hair. Have you tried taking omega 3s or flax seeds, b vitamins, vitamin E, etc? Also make sure you are getting enough protein in your diet. That along with all the protein treatments, DCs, and moisturizing should help.

I agree with the inside. But I also think the system has to be in balance first. And there are studies that show that even test results can be deceiving and that you should treat the symptoms and not just the results. So she needs medication to balance stuff, and then food and stuff of course follows. BUT really without it balanced it's kinda pointless as you're fighting an uphill battle.
