Hymn Lining

Okay, I am a born and raised Southerner so this type of music is nothing new to me. However, I had no idea that there was actually an "official" term associated with this type of worship music.

For those who are not familiar with it, most Southern churches were known for this type of call and response singing... This video brings back dear memories of my childhood. Back when you could actually tell the difference between "church music" and "secular music".

Not yet... but I've heard about it.

I've always been told that it's origins come from slavery. When the slaves were in the fields they used to sing songs like this from their homeland... and during the underground railroad they would communicate with one another about escaping but the slave masters could not understand what they were saying. For example "Slow down chariot let me ride" meant that the a group was going out that evening and such... I'm no historian but this is always what I've been taught.

I remember them Hymm Lining when I would visit grandmother's church in MS but I didn't know what it was called, and I didn't understand anything about her church. This is connecting a dot for me!

Cool. I was always mesmerized by the process... Half the time the person leading would moan the words so I was a teenager before I figured out half of the words. Lol

It's a fascinating series if you ever get a chance to listen to it.... some bones you can spit out..lol...but for the most part, gives you much to think about. We have deep roots....

momi, thanks for posting. It is sad that they are becoming extinct. That's very unique and beautiful sound!
