Hi ladies,
My dad passed away a year ago and I guess I went through a depression. I neglected my hair and tons of other things in life.

I recently started taking care of my hair again. I was about to dye my hair and noticed a huge amount of hair breakage on the top of my head, like no hair

I'd like your opinion. Do I work to get this hair to grow back and catch up or should I shave my head and start fresh ?

The rest of my hair is shoulder length but seeing that huge amount of breakage really hurt me.

What would you do ?

I'm sorry for your loss and sorry about your hair loss.

The last time this happened to me, it was on the crown, and I ended up cutting the rest off. The thing with crown breakage is that, for me, it takes the longest to show any length. Plus, I seem to grow slower in that area. I think that’s why I decided to cut it in the end. That, and the rest of my hair wasn’t in the best condition - it had been a bit neglected. It broke my heart, but looking back, it was the right decision.

At the moment, I’ve got a patch of breakage at the front of my hair from a few stressful months and slipping out of my routine. I’m planning to really look after it. Because it’s right at the front, it’ll be quicker to show progress.

In short : It depends on a few things
- The size of the patch
- Condition of the rest of my hair
- The location of the patch.

Thank you so much for this. I think I'm going to cut it all off and start over ‍ my hair isn't in the best shape at the moment.

Thank you very much.

@Starell gave you some wonderful advice. It was detailed, thorough yet succint, and based upon her experience. I agree with her. In addition, if you feel comfortable, you may want to take a few photos to include the crown, the back, side and front of your hair, all keeping your face covered to preserve your privacy. That would give us a visual and we would be able to see exactly what is going on. Sometimes a photo may show something that could communicate even more information than a description. In all honesty, I think what @Starell stated and suggested is golden.

Cut it all. Or commit to adding year or two* of wearing a cornrow/braided style while periodically trimming the longer sections.

*until the new growth catches up with the trimmed areas.

I did the latter along with using up my stash of Sulfur8, Kalidescope, and Castor oils. The braids (protective) will help you maintain your ends as your hair grows back.

Thank you ladies for the wonderful advice. I have decided to shave my head and start fresh. The hair that's longer doesn't even look healthy so I'm starting over. Thank you all for the advice !
I'm wishing you all the best on your new journey! I will be keeping you in my thoughts as you begin to heal and move forward :yep:
Luckily, wig technology has really gone leaps and bounds, so whether you decide to embrace rocking short hair or want to wear wigs as it grows out, I'm sure you'll find something that helps you feel pretty as you get back to your hair goals.

Thank you
