Where there is dryness there is no softness. Softness, however, is always what you want to achieve, if possible. Moisture in the hair simply means Softness, not Wetness or Oiliness. This is the purpose of a SOFTENING, Conditioning Lye Relaxer, SOFTENING Moisturizing Conditioner, SOFTENING Setting Lotion, and a SOFT Styling Spray with minimum alcohol in it and the SOFTENING Crème Press Hairdressing."

I found this on a Shamboosie website, it makes sense... but I don't know if it will change my greasemonkey ways:cool:

It sounds to me like they are just trying to creatively market that product:ohwell:. My hair is very soft, b/c I take care of my body inside and out, and I have a shower fliter.

I'm glad that you posted this. I was just inquiring about moisture and greasiness last week on here. I was in the dark before but now I see the light. LOL!

I am having a hard time trying to find that protein moisture balance. I have been trying a couple of techniques since I started my regimen about a month ago and I am still not satisfied. First I was washing with an Aphogee conditioner and using a protein leave in. Then I switch to DPR-11 the last time I washed my hair which was on Saturday and used Infusium leave in to roller set my hair. I then used Elastic QP mango butter and olive oil to seal in moisture after drying my hair. I really don't see a big difference. My hair is not soft nor is it really hard. I apply mango butter and then oil to my hair each morning and before I go to bed and it looks wet at first but then in the morning or by the end of the day my hair looks stiff like I just washed it and air dry it with the wrong leave in. Any suggestions?

For me doing the wet strand assessment helps to determine whether I have the appropriate moisture protein balance. There is a sticky thread on this forum that explains this in detail.

It sounds like your hair may be balanced already. From the posts I have read on this board, some people need more protien than others.

It took a while for me to figure out what my "balanced" hair felt like. The best way to describe it is to say that it feels strong and has "structural integrity" but it is soft and pliable at the same time.

I hope this helps :)

Brownsugababe,

Try following your protein treatments with a good moisturizing conditioner of your choice. I find that I have to be careful with protein, or my hair just gets real hard. I've started using Marcheriamour's protein treatment technique. Apply your protein conditioner, whatever it is to dry hair, then soak a towel in hot water, squeez out the water and cover your hair with it, and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. I usually get under my hood dryer so that the towel can stay nice and warm and give me a good steam. After that, wash as usual. Then I follow up with a moisturizing conditioner that I leave on for a minimum of 5 minutes. Somtimes I go up to 15-20 minutes depending on how dry my hair is, then rinse, apply your leave ins, rollerset, etc.

I know this sounds tedious, but I've found that I cannot use any kind of protein treatment without following it up with a moisturizing conditioner. If I don't, my hair just gets hard.

HTH!

Brownsugababe,

Forgot to include that I also wear a plastic cap over the wet towel to keep the heat/steam from escaping.

I had to go through the does wet/greasy equal moisturized thing too. I used to PILE on moisturizer like it was going out of style. My hair would just be limp with moisturizer. And before that, before the boards really, I had this thing where I thought high octane SUPER SHINE meant moisturized and healthy--so I would pile on grease to get that going. It was shining to high heaven, but the hair under the layers of lube was suffering. Not a good look

First lessen, too many Kitchen Chemists! Get out of the kitchen and out of the business. You don’t know what you are doing OR WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT... It's ok to chat about hair, but I've been teaching hair for over 25 years.

First lessen, eh?

Proud kitchen chemist checking in . . .
Honestly, I agree with much of what he says-- but why does Shamboosie always have to try to "dis" the do-it-yourselfers and forum knowledge seekers man? That brotha does not like the hair boards  We aren't that bad ya know. It wasn't until I found my way around to some of y'all "kitchen chemists" that my hair began to turn around-- so take that Shamboosie.:lachen: Kitchen chemists rule.

Girl, I know thats right. Well first of all, not all of us are kitchen chemists. Many of us are trained chemists Mr. Shamboosie. The only chemistry background he probably has are the Nexxus people giving him the 20 min sales pitch way back when about how "revolutionary" their stuff is to get him to start using it in the first place. When stylist say things like this is really ticks me off because you can just tell that they are mad because they are not getting my 30 bucks a week anymore. They have yet to figure out that the more you share with me and the more you allow me to share with you, the greater trust and respect I have with you which translates into you getting my money on a regular.

I got an attitude right there.

You said it, but it bares repeating kitchen chemists rule!

Shamboosie's book was the first hair care book that I read and I agree with much of what he says, except for his stance on hair boards. I love you lovely LHCF ladies.

Oh, and just so he knows, Humectress is good for softness, but it's not the only thing for softness.

like thesweetone said, I think you need more intense moisturizers. Try holding the protien for a week (while useing Deep conditioners, etc) they slowly add the protein back and see what happens.

humectress is not for everyone, it made my hair hard tangled, matted and brittle

Amen! Sistaslick! Cause I walk around with tea, castor oil, olive oil and many herbs in my hair! And my hair absolutely loves it!

And another thing, I have soft hair (always has) but never long hair! I believe it goes beyond just soft hair. I will admit that I have gotten away with not adding moisture (pre-LHCF) but my hair is all the better with the moisturizers.

Hi Brownsugababe,
It sounds like maybe you need to concentrate on moisture rather than protein. If your hair is not breaking, you only need to reinforce your hair with a good protein conditioner every few weeks. This was hard for me to accept and I still struggle with sticking to moisturizing conditioners. When I used protein weekly, my hair started feeling hard and eventually started breaking more. Even my beautician could tell I was over-doing it on the protein. Try a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as Keracare (the best one I've used).

Yeah Shamboosie & Cathy Howse like to dis the "do it yourselfers"

I think it is them just trying to get more money:ohwell: I take their useful information and come right back to this board.

Forget Shamboosie..whatever his name..j/k..thanks for posting.

ITA. Shamboosie's dissing the hair boards got me interested in them in the first place....I may have never found LHCF. And he's wrong because many of you ladies are hair geniuses! He also got me to try Humectress....which I absolutely love. The only other DC I like is ORS Pak.

So about the dryness vs. softnes part, my hair usually feels dry later in the week (even when moisturizing daily) but it stayed VERY soft this week   . I did flat iron it after washing(which I BARELY do) with the same Creme Press he was talking about (Dudley's).....I am wondering if thats why my hair feels extra soft....I did mix porosity control with the humectress when I DC'd. Maybe I will try it again this weekend but without the flat iron because I am not trying to make that a habit...I will be so happy if my hair STAYS soft throughout the week.
