How to style short hair?

Ok so my hair is at an awkward length right now.

Not twa and not enough long enough to put into a pony tail. I currently have a sew-in installed and want to take it out. Question is how do i style my hair(could be curly or flat ironed) while looking cute and professional at the same time? Only thing I can think of is using a headband like below but i dont think it's professional enough imo.
ETA: i dont think my hair is this long now. the pic is from when i was previously natural.

It really depends on your work environment. For many environments that is professiional enough.

At that length you can band it, do two strand twists, do finger coils, do twist outs, do flat twist outs. You can also do combinations of those. I have seen ladies with flat twist in the front and twist out in the back.

If those aren't professional enough for your work environment then you may have to go to wigs or extensions until you grow your hair out long enough for something else.

I wore puffs a lot during this time:

My hair was about the length your hair is now. I tried twistouts and braidouts but they just didn't look the way I wanted them to.

I like that style. How did you do it. Put the band up front and push it back to make the puff? Really cute

Did you notice any excessive breakage or tangles from wearing puffs.

No. I made sure to keep my hair moisturized and I sealed with castor oil. I would probably use crisco now, but I think any heavy oil or butter is best for keeping the ends sealed well. Sealing helped to minimize my tangles and I had virtually no breakage. I wore puffs most of the time from NL to CBL.

I'm there now, I have been shingling (i think that's what it's called) with gel and leave in. It looks cute and I can leave it alone for a few days. And once its old i can put it in a puff.

pbi: i think wearing it like that contributed to ssk so it's a good idea to switch to styles that involve stretching every once in a while.

Ok I might be wrong on the definition of shingling lol! I wash, condition, add leave in, rake gel through and let it dry undisturbed. A pic of it wet

two strand twists were my friend and wash and gos. once my hair got to 5 inches, i couldn't do the wash and gos anymore without creating knots and tangles.

Do you guys undo/unravel the 2 strand twist in the mornings? i have a wash and go right now and im not feeling it. :ohwell:

It depends on how cute they are. If my twists are cute then I will rock them for a week and then take them out. If they aren't cute then yes I take them out and wear a twist out.

At my current length between 3 and 4" my twists aren't that cute  I've been wearing finger coils for the past 3 weeks instead.
