I see allot of girls doing wet wraps, but I can't even wrap my hair dry:lachen:.
I see rollersetting, and wraping, but again I can't wrap my hair.

Anyone have any clues or tips?

hmmm that's an interesting question
The best I can do is stretch my hair with braids and twist, but I have never tried to get it straight without heat. Perhaps if you stretched it with braids for a day until it was completely dry. then took the braids down and wrapped it immediately and nice and snug with a silk scarf. and left it wrapped for a day or two, you might train your hair to get straight.

Maybe use an anti frizz serum to wrap the hair. I dunno I have never tried to straighten without heat. But with a little patient it could be done.???

Natural African descent hair is curly because it has hydrogen bonds. The only way those bonds can be effectively broken is using heat or chemical. I think the closest you can get to a straight(er) hair style without heat is a bantu-knot out or a large twist out. The tension from that will stretch the hair. But I currently don't know of any way to make natural hair bone straight without heat.

I don't think that is possible unless you have a super loose texture. IMO the best you can do is make sure your hair is very healthy, use a heat protectent and monitor how hot the blow dryer/flat iron is.

Well, since you want a straight look, you'll have to learn to rollerset (on a cool setting) or wrap.

There are a lot of videos on you tube that can give you a tutorial of both methods. We all have to start somewhere.

I've never heard of a natural straighten their hair without heat (stretch yes, but straighten, no).

i've seen naturals with loose hair types get their hair straight with rollersetting. that doesn't really work well further down the line though. maybe you could try cold blow drying? or maybe you could just get a straight weave.

You can stretch it - twist it and use perm rods overnight. It wont straighten, but its easier to put in a bun. HTH.

If you can't wrap or rollerset than you're gonna have to practice and learn because those are about the only ways to get natural hair straight.

Banding will stretch it out to maximum length but it won't be straight per say.....just stretched and poofy.

Also silk wraps will straighten natural hair very nicely w/o the use of a flat iron but once again you will have to be able to rollerset and wrap to do that. You can learn....just look at youtube vids and practice.

Out of curiosity.....what degree of straightness are you looking for? Like sleek/silky straight....

The question is, how easily does your natural hair slick down?

Natural hair can be straightened with no heat if your hair texture is in the 3 curly / wavy range, you simply rollerset, wrap and voila! This can be done airdried.

If you're in the 4 tightly coily range, the only way you can straighten your hair without heat is:

A) If you have a silky texture that easily slicks down naturally with no product and your coils behave more like smooth curls, you'll be able to get smooth straight hair with no more then an airdried rollerset and wrap.

B) If it has already been chemically processed to be straight when wet, in that state, you can get heatless straight hair.

If you have 4a coily hair that wont slick down and isnt silky but rather would feel very rough if left with no products, there are ways to elongate or stretch type 4 hair like twist-outs, braid-outs and banding but its still a textured look and wont result in pin straight hair.

I'm type 4a Coily with a tendency to be dry, that wont slick down for anything in its natural state. I recently saw this tutorial on rollersetting natural hair she did a great job but I saw it as pretty pointless to rollerset tightly coily hair before flat ironing, when she took her hair out the rollers it was still kinky and its gonna require the same amount of heat to get straight at the end of the day........now she was fine leaving her hair poofy so that worked out for her, she air-dried then lightly flat ironed.

If you're natural, going for the silky straight look like I do when I straighten, and you have a similar type 4 hair texture as me, imo, your best bet is to blow dry, press the roots, then flat iron, my hair always comes out silky straight:yep: but if your hair slicks down naturally and is better defined as curly then coily then rollerset away;)

I've seen some really great type 4 silk wraps:yep:. Roller sets work great for type 4 hair as well.

The op cannot wrap or roller set though so she'll have to start from scratch.

^^^Please post the link:yep: because I have yet to see one that was worth the effort:nono: I always end up looking it the video like:ohwell: all that manipulation just to put the same amount of heat anyway:lol:

There are definitely type 4s who have the silky kind of hair that will slick down easily into a roller, like if you remember RobotXcore's professor, familygoingnatural on youtube, those type 4 ladies can get their hair straight in a rollerset. Or marand, her hair is more wavey and her texture has been loosened from multiple henna's she gets smooth rollersets........but have you ever seen a 4a coily natural with hair that has a tendency to be dry and hair that wont slick down do a successful rollerset? I know I sure haven't, I'd love to see that:scratchch

There was a thread not too long ago about this hair wrapping technique where they use ribbon to wrap tightly around sections of hair. (I think it was called threading??) When you take it down your hair will be silky straight even type 4 naturals.

The only way I can get my hair pretty straight without heat or rollersetting is banding. After my hair was completely dry I could wrap it at night and it would get straighter is the days went by. This silk wrap or ribbon wrap, I don't think I can do it. I couldn't even wet wrap my relaxed hair and was jealous of my roomates who could do so.

I love familygoingnatural!

I'm all over the boards and can't always remember who and what I saw where but i can do some searching because I know what I'm looking for and I'll send you some links.

African threading straightens hair somewhat...(and since you said no heat) relaxers do too. :giggle:

Jamaraa, great minds think alike. :giggle: I was just coming to say that threading like this (not necessarily in this do but in this way) and wearing the style for a week or two can get your hair straight:

We were discussing this a while back in this thread.

Curlformers do stretch hair too, but it'd look like straight hair in large curls, as opposed to being Type 1 straight. I guess you could then wrap it to get it straight? *shrug* (When this hair of mine was put in Curlformers while wet and left to airdry, this was the result. I didn't have any product in it, just water; so I don't know if product would have made it better or not.) I will tell you this, I haven't figured out how to separate it once I get it to this state. The hair gets frizzy when I try to separate it esp. the ends.

Maybe if one repeated the use of Curlformers, the hair would be "trained" to look straighter temporarily. Or perhaps the secret to enjoying Curlformers is not to try to get your hair to look like the next person, but just to accept the results you get and enjoy them--frizz and all. :scratchch

I don't know if she has the texture you're looking for because I'm not good at hair typing.

AFashionSlave...... http://public.fotki.com/AFashionSla...tos/hair_pics/natural_hair_album/roller_sets/

It's not bone straight of course but you could silk wrap it and silken it out further.

I'll post more when I have time to search.....that's if you're interested.

Ok thank you everyone! I'll look into the threading technuqe.

My hair is diffrent everyday. My hair has changed drastically after I did a henna treatment :wallbash:. It changed the texture of my hair, On the left side of my hair towards the back there is a patch of 3a hair, then here are patches of 3c, and 4a every where.

Somedays I can do large braidouts, or Bantuknots, and have great waves with no frizz, even when I go out side it doesn't change,:drunk: It moves too! Other days :nono: my hair is a poofy fizzy mess, that will not lay down and be tamed for anything.

I don't have a constant enough hair type at the moment, to know what will work to what extent, and what will not work. :ohwell:

But I'll start to practice rollersetting and wrapping. :yep:

I'm familiar with her, she's a beautiful lady, gorgeous hair, but she's definitely a softer silkier hair texture then what I was referencing.

Its ok if you're finding typing tricky, there are alot of sub-categories to trip people up...I'll try to be more clear. The texture I'm referencing its type 4 non-silky, the best visual example of what I'm referencing is Shangai, lead singer of the rock band the Noisettes or RusticBeauty this is the texture that even when you shingle it with gel it will not lay down, that if left completely bare and devoid of product would feel very rough, that has coils the size of a pen spring or smaller, that is naturally dry, if you can find me a fotki or a youtube of someone with THAT texture, successfully setting it on traditional large rollers.....well suffice it to say I'll be amazed. I just dont think a neat smooth rollerset like that is feasible for our particular hair type. But I'd love to see who you're talking about:yep:

I've experimented with rollersets. They certainly do straighten my hair out a lot. NOT silky straight though.

I also blow dried a section with my denman (cool setting). It came out surprisingly straight. Again... NOT silky

Yea, I acheive the straightness with a rollerset, it's not silky, but my rollersets with a relaxer weren't silky straight either.

I've noticed that when I have the slight puffiness from a rollerset, I get a lot of more stares and hellos. I guess my hair looks alot fuller? IDK.

Oh BTW, I did a rollerset last night using no heat; I had the dryer setting on cool.
