Run the Race that God Has Set Before You

1 Samuel 2:3 says, “Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed.”

The Lord is a God of knowledge. At times men trust their own wisdom or the wisdom of others which can prove to be a very big mistake in life. Arrogance and pride cause some to feel that they are more holy and knowledgeable than even God. The scripture says that God alone weighs the actions of men. He is a God of knowledge and He alone is holy.

It is important to remember Who God is so that you can build the foundation of your life upon Him. Hebrews 12:1 encourages us to run the race that is set before us. You can’t run anyone else’s race and they can not run yours. Hebrews 12:2 says, “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Jesus ran His race, keeping His eyes focused upon God’s purpose for Him. Jesus looked away from all that tried to distract Him and finished the race that God had for Him to run. Hebrews 12:2 from the Amplified Bible says, “Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Look away from all distractions. Jesus wants you to walk out the completion of every good thought, desire, plan and idea that He has placed in your heart. He gives the first incentive for our belief (He is the source of our faith) and He is the finisher of it. He perfects it and brings it to maturity.

The race that He has set for you can only be completed in Him. Do not let anything or anyone steer you off course. Do not await the approval of those around you before you decide to run your race. Men at times make the things of God seem impossible to obtain. If you wait on others, when will you be able to enter into the joy and promises of the Lord? Your walk with the Lord is personal. Jesus never intended for others to dictate how your life is to be lived.

Every believer has their own personal plan, blue print, map or course to follow. God made you and if you want to know what is best for yourself, you will have to go to the one who made you. Shake off every weight, burden, distraction and yoke that would try to weigh down your faith. Enter into the joy of the Lord in your race and let no man rob you of it. There is so much more in the Lord. Only the Lord, the Author and Finisher of your faith, can reveal the course or path of your race. Psalm 16:11 says, “Thou (the Lord) wilt shew me the path of life: in Thy presence is fullness of joy; at Thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”

The Lord will show you the path of life. There is fullness of joy and pleasures for evermore in the will of God for you. God not only wants you to be joyful, He wants you to experience His unending pleasures as a believer. Walk in the liberty you have in Him. Enjoy life as He has given and partake of the pleasures He has given you.

Study Guide

1. Hebrews 12:2 and Psalm 16:11 shows that the Lord authors and finishes your faith, that He plots the course of your race and He writes the blueprint for your life. Now that you have seen in scripture that He shows you the path of life, allow your heart to anchor itself in this truth so that you will look unto Him and run your race well.
