Hello, I am a new member. I need help. My hair is relaxed and just past my ears, my first goal is to grow it to shoulder length. My 14 year daughter's hair is short as well. Very cotton like, put a relaxer on it to straighten it out, but her hair is very dry. Please advise with what vitamins, shampoos, conditioners and etc. Help a lady and child who seeks to be hair satisfied with any length. Just get it to grow!!! Duly noted, we must stop the use of pink oil moisturizer, blow dryers and curling irons..

What is your current regime?
First I would advise a gentle shampoo..such as creme of nature, soft sheen breakthru shampoo, shampoo without sulfates...

I definitely advise that you deep condition for 30-60 min after you shampoo with a heat cap..My favorite deep conditioners are keracare humecto, elucence moisturebalancing, motions moisture plus, and queen helene cholesterol...

You should use a leave in conditioner...and seal in the moisture with some sort of oil..

You should stay away from heat..try practicing airdrying with wet sets, rollersets, braidouts, twists outs, etc..

Moisture is one of the most important things you can do for your hair. IT keeps your hair from breaking..and gives your hair increased elasticity. A lot of us have been using S Curl no drip curl activator, or some other variation of curl activator on a daily basis.

Protein treatments, once a month are good for preventing breakage also..it will strengthen your hair But you must follow up a protein treatment with a moisturizing treatment..b/c some protein treatments will dry out your hair and cause brittle hair. Some mild proteins like motions cpr, ORS hair mayo, or aubrey gpb are good. Or stronger proteins/reconstructors nexxus keraphix, affirm 5n1.

As for vitamins..do a search for the bargello regime... Generally people are taking 5mg of Biotin, anywhere from 1,500+ mg of MSM, 500mg panthenotic acids, GNC ultranourish hair..etc..

You might find that if you are using a no-lye relaxer, you hair might be drier, then if you use a lye relaxer. Lye relaxers are said to be better for you hair.

I have a feeling i am leaving things out...so i am sure other ladies will have some imput. HTH

Foxybronx gave a very thorough reply.... I couldn't said it better. But I will throw this lil bit in....

1) Begin pre-treatments with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, yes the grocery store kind. Dampen your hair with water then apply the warm oil all over your hair. * Try to concentrate on your ends * Leave on for 30 min. Then rinse & proceed to shampoo. Olive oil works very well, but currently I'm using VO5.

2) Do occassional scalp massages. Literary use the soft pad of your finger tips to "massage" your scalp. Members here like to use oils during the massage. This helps with scalp circulation & it feels really good too

.

3) Sleep in satin / silk bonnets &/or satin/silk pillow cases. If at all possible, try to stay away from "cotton" hair accessories (cotton scrunchies).

4) Use wide tooth combs

5) Handle hair very gently when dry, but especially when wet

6) If at all possible, try not to manipulate the hair. If U can get away with "Finger combing", then do it.

7) I avoid products with mineral oil, petroletum, alcohol. I must admit that my conditioner (Motions) has mineral oil. I add olive oil to it however.

8) Get away from that pink lotion, especially if you're applying it to dry hair. Some members have no problem with it, but I've used it for 13 yrs & the moment I stopped was the same moment that I began to see beautiful results.

9) Give your ends special care. Moisturize daily with some type of "water" based product (leave in conditioner, S-Curl, or even plain water), followed by oil. My fav is Hot Six Oil. This oil works like a charm

Dang, I know that there's more, but I'm drawing a blank. If nothing else, just remember to "M O P" your hair... Moisturize, Oil, Protect. This is a nice lil acronym that I've created to help me along the way

Hi, I just wanted to say welcome.....Both ladies gave great advice. I did want to say that just stopping the blowdrying, and curling irons will make a big improvement...maybe not right away but they will.

All the ladies above gave great advice. One thing I must emphasize is that you must be PATIENT when trying to correct years of unhealthy hair practices. It has taken a good year to get my 5 year old's hair to the point of being normal feeling and healthy (This after medication screwed it up).

The practices that they list above work, and they work well, sometimes not in the first use. So please don't try something once and get upset if it doesn't work instantaneously.

Just my two cents worth.

Good luck and God Bless you on teaching your daughter healthy hair habits/attitudes.

Hi! Welcome to the board. I'm fairly new myself. My daughter has very short hair. Everyday when she combed her hair little hairs (broken, split) would be everywhere, all on her shoulders, everywhere. I did a protein treatment on her hair. Started washing at least twice a week. And the main thing...moisturizer! We use elasta qp penetrating moisturizer but ii's just like the other curl activator sprays. Immediately noticed results, no more little hairs everywhere. I myself have been using the no 'poo method and daily rinsing and have seen tremendous results as well. (No 'poo is washing with conditioner instead of shampoo, and daily rinsing is wetting your hair everyday for moisture be it with or without shampoo or conditioner.) Hope this helps alittle.

I was just curious if you are from Austin, I met this lady at Sally's Beauty Supply and she had several questions about hair care and I helped her with some and gave her the LHCF web site address. She also had a 14yr old daughter with neck length hair just seem so simular. I think all of the ladies hit the hair care right on the tip good luck and again welcome aboard

Welcome to the board Yuga
I'm still sort of new to the board (joined in February), but what made a very big difference for me is learning that one of the most important things included in a good hair regimine is "moisture". The hair has to stay moist at all times". This has worked in such a charming way! I'm so happy with the improvement of my hair. Good luck to you
