How soon after having a baby did you relax your hair?

And how many weeks of new growth did you have total? What method did you use in the meantime? What about the shedding?

I relaxed two months after the birth of my second son. I didn't relax throughout; so, you can imagine how much growth I had. But, I cut my hair to a chin-length Victoria Beckham bob due to shedding. I wanted to start fresh.

With my first, I only did one relaxer and braided my hair not long afterwards. I don't remember as much as my boys are nine years apart, lol.

I relaxed my hair 4 weeks after having my son. I didn't relax my hair the whole time I was pregnant, mostly wore cornrows. I didn't pay attention to how much new growth I had, but I imagine it was a lot because my hair grew faster when I was pregnant.

I don't recall any post-partum shedding. Never even heard of it until LHCF - so it's possible that I just wasn't paying enough attention. I didn't relax while pregnant because my mother advised me not to, as she said the body has different reactions to chems from hormones, etc. when pregnant.

Don't judge me, but I relaxed my hair throughout my pregnancy. Even relaxed it the day before my DD was born! So yeah, don't follow my footsteps :lachen: I'm natural now

all thru my pregnancy. i think i was braided for 6 weeks. that mess got hot and my head started sweating all the time, so i was in the salon once a week after that. and getting relaxed every 6-8 weeks. im transitioning now. and my daughter is 5 months old.

With the last one, I waited about two months. It took me that long to feel normal again.

I had about three months worth of new growth with baby 2 and a full nine months with baby 1. Baby 1, braids the entire time. Baby 2- my hair was cut short, short and I kept cutting it & braids at the end.

The shedding wasn't too bad for me and I didn't really notice any shedding until I stopped breastfeeding with both children.

With this one, I don't think I'm going back to relaxer. It'll be almost a year since I've had a relaxer by the time the baby is born. I may just grow the relaxer out. We'll see...

I relaxed about six weeks after giving birth. I wasn't measuring then, but my hair did retain lots of length. I didn't experience pp shedding; in fact, my hair became thicker as the months went on. Hoping for the same with this second pregnancy!

Great question! I was natural with my first little one. I got a virgin relaxer late in 2009 and found out I was pregnant the next day :lachen:. I won't be getting touch ups and I already have about 3 inches of new growth. I am wearing a bun about 90% of the time. I don't imagine I'll be able to get a relaxer until about 6 - 8 weeks after I have my little one.

I relaxed at about 2 months after. I had stopped breast feeding by then. With my first daughter I relaxed immediately after (but I wasn't breast feeding). Because you will probably get so many opinions, I would say to ask your Doctor what he/she would recommend.

I relaxed throughout my pregnancy and three weeks after giving birth which was 14 weeks post for me.

I relaxed the day b4 my due date :look:

So did I! I told my ex-stylist that I wanted to look good in the hospital room when my visitors came by to see me and the baby

BTW this was 12 years ago and I honestly never gave relaxers much thought until I started to post on forums 3 years ago.

I relaxed about two months after giving. I was in braids before that and was about two months post even then. Unfortunately, I had alot of hair fall out due to shedding and its only now that the shedding had decreased a bit but its still there.

I've just done one relaxer the whole time, and I'm almost done now so I won't be relaxing again until after the baby's here.

I relaxed about 4 weeks after giving birth. I wore braids for my entire pregnancy. I didn't experience any shedding with either of my children, thank goodness.

I feel weird about chemicals and babies.. I personally feel like if you're going to breast feed you should wait until your little one is completely weened and then consider relaxing :) but thats just my opinion. If you're not breastfeeding as soon as you have time get your hair relaxed!

I didn't relax my whole pregnancy so I had almost a years worth of new growth. I relaxed a couple of weeks after I had my baby.... my hair did start shedding 2 or 3 months post partum tho

I relaxed twice Antepartum and my first relaxer was 10 week postpartum. I just stay away from henna and dyes.

With my son I cut all my hair off and went natural for 6-7 months later I relaxed or texlaxed 6 weeks after. With my daughter I relaxed once at 10 months post while pregnant and she will be 5 months old when I relax again at 8 months post.

So for those that waited to relax after giving birth...would you say the post partum shedding ending up being....worse? Since the relaxer is known to weaken the hair...

I've only experienced my edges but the thing with PPS is that it's going to happen whether you relax or not. Relaxing weakens the hair so you may have breakage issue not related, but the shedding will happen due declining hormones since hormones allowed you to hold onto more hair. Relaxing might make it more evident though, especially if it all happens at once

TRUTH, I just came from visiting my bestie and od-son who is now 8 mnths... She is natural, and I noticed when hair pulled back edges werent as thick, she let me know EXACTLY what you stated, that due to the hormones lacking she experienced some shedding

Thanks for your input ladies. I'm currently 24 weeks post, and I'm heavily debating on putting a relaxer in before my baby girl gets here. She was due on the 5 th, but seeing that she hadn't made her grand appearance yet, I may still have a drop of time to make something happen with this relaxer lol
