How long until you "learned" your hair?

Im finding my biggest frustration in understanding/knowing what my hair needs. I think I may need more patience cuz Im only 2 months into my learning. erplexed

How long did it take you to learn what your hair needs?

Good question..Ive been 4 years natural..and I'm still getting to know it...I just know to leave it alone most of the time.

Unfortunately it changes with time. So I think you're always learning about your hair. Especially if you're trying to grow your hair out, or if you recently cut it a lot. I notice with my hair every other inch or two seems to bring about a change in how I can style my hair or how I care for it.

I known my hair most of my life. When i was growing up i didn't listen to my hair so it didn't grow. Now i listen and ask my hair questions. we keep communication open.


Like now, she is telling me I only have a few more weeks to have fum with her then it's back to braids. we are on a mission.

I'm still getting to know my hair even tho' I've been natural for over 10 years, but I've been a part of this forum learning how to properly care for my hair since Feb 2006. For the most part I know what makes my hair happy.

ITA it took me a little over a year to learn and accept what my hair liked and needed. Now, I pretty much know what will set off breakage for me (main thing is NOT washing at least twice a week). It's like my hair starts to say , you know you wrong.

I just got it this year and I have been on this board a long time!

I can finally see progress now that I have gotten it, too.

I think when I first joined the board, I was not really serious - for over a year. When I did get serious, I became a Product Junkie, a Vitamin Junkie and a Topical Growth aid junkie. (I am still a conditioner junkie because I just can't get enough ) It's like I wanted to go from neck to APL in 6months by any mean necessary!

Once I chilled out and started listening to my hair everything started adding up. After all this time, I am just "getting it". So much time wasted.

I would say to really REALLY know her it took me about 9 mos to a year. I mean. I know her to the point that I can read ingredient labels and know what will work and how it will work. I know her THAT much.

It took me about 4-5 months to learn my relaxed hair, then I started transitioning. I'm still learning my natural hair, but I do have a few things pinned down already.

I want to get to the point where I can tell what will work for my hair and what wont by the ingredients, like Locks said. Or I can tell if something is working for my hair or not w/o waiting until after two weeks of using the darn product.

Guess Ive got a little longer to get there..

HD - Im serious about it, I just have to fight these frustrations!! I know its early yet but dag.. you know how it can be!

I started trying to get to 'know' my hair last September and I think I am as familiar with it as I am going to get. There are always little surprises that pop up that make you say "Damn, I guess I don't really know you at all."

Well up until I began to pay attention and take a dedicated interest in doing it myself, which would be a little over 2 years now.

So far Ive learned that....

1. My hair doesnt like a WHOLE lotta protein. It needs some but thrives off moisture more than nething.

2. My hair likes to be left alone! It seems to get annoyed w/ alot of STUFF being done to it.

3. 10 weeks may be too long of a stretch for me w/o protective styles such as cornrows, etc. Im thinking 8 will be okay. Ill see this next go round.

4. Im ALMOST sure that my hair type is 3b or c towards the front, 2 something in the middle and some 4 boys in the back. Im gonna call it 'F'.

Well I started my journey in August of last year and I've learned quite a few things about my hair. I still have lots to learn so I really can't say just yet....

Hi Kels!

I'm still learning my hair too. From what she is telling me, she says she needs more moisture, and I am trying to add more, but she just drinks it up. She's also telling me less manipulation, which could mean the end to wet rollersets.

I think it'll take me another 6 - 12 months to find out what she really wants.

I'm still getting to know my hair. I've just been very serious for the last 4 months or so. While I know how to treat the front of my head really well. The middle and back of my hair is another texture so I'm trying to learn how to properly care for it.

I'm 6-7 months in I'm still learning as well but there still a quite bit that I feel I've earned about my hair! It took about 6 months to learn the "basics" about my hair needs.
