My guess is she's been trying to reach him for a while but the birthday excuse made sense to get his mom involved.

I feel weird now. I congratulated my ex on the birth of his child. I regretted doing it almost immediately. Maybe because I thought that he assumed I still wanted him, or was jealous of him having a child at 23 and then kind of being forced to marry the mother. Really, I was so happy it wasn't me who got stuck with him.

Don't feel weird or bad about congratulating him. That's a natural instinct from a nice human being to congratulate someone on the birth of a child. Now you can move on and focus on you. Forget about him, his wife, and baby. Try not to give them any space in your head.
