Not long....think like 6 months.
My SL is 17", and APL 20/21

I washed 1x a week, and then a bun, clawclip or somethng like that.

But to get to shoulderlength from where i started, damaged 3-6" :nono: 2 years.

I used to think that SL to APL would be the biggest hump to get over, now I'm thinking it may be APL to BSL. It took me about 6 months to graze APL and 9 months to fully reach APL.

check my siggy. it took me 6 months to get where i am now (just grazing apl) I hope to be full undeniable APL by the end of the year (that will make it 9-10 months)...

here's hoping!

^^^ I agree w/the above sl to touching apl was just about a year ( jul 08), I am having a hard time getting from apl to bsl .

It took me less than six months, but I was already past shoulder length when I joined the forum. It really didn't take me that long, but I know my hair grows faster than most because I eat a lot of protein, I work out every day, and I make sure I take a multi-vitamin every day.

This is my next goal and it seems that my 4 inches or so is soooo long away. thanks ladies for posting atleast I have some inspiration 6-8mths is not so bad.

I started at SL and I would say about 9 months.... I'm sure I'm there now but I am 12 weeks post and I have no plans on relaxing until my Birthday @ the end of Dec... But I must say the growth has slowed down since I've become a little lazy with my reggie...

I've been at it for 6 months now and am slightly less than an inch from APL. I am hoping that by December I can revisit this thread with a definite vote.

meh i really dont know, i have been growing for almost 15 months from neck length and i think i still have a few cms to go. each time i pull my hair it falls somewhere different. sometimes it actually looks like im past apl and sometimes it looks like i have a few inches to go.
i'm thinking about just going by the front of my hair because when that reaches apl the back will have for sure.

and i am one of themmmmm.... ive been growing from necklength since march 2008... but than again, i guess i would be at APL by now.. i grew out my relaxer and did the BC... so nevermind..

im not somewhere between SL and APL.. and i just wana be APPPLLL

It took me about two straight years of trying. I had to cut a lot of damage off from color and then get my hair into a healthy state. Then I had to learn to put my hair up to retain length and teach myself to rollerset and avoid heat. Now that I have reached APL I just cut my ends blunt and maintain the look. But I really want my hair to CURL on my shoulders and HANG to APL. So you know what that means? I have to get a little past full Bra-strap length to enjoy curled APL hair. Is anyone else like me?

When stretched completely straight - my hair just reaches an inch above my brastrap. I need to be two inches below it for my hair to spiraled or curled and reach APL. Hope that makes sense to you.

It took me about 7 months, and that was with a set back where I cut off about 1.5 inches.

My 4 things were

- no heat

- consistant protein (coupled with proper moisture balance)

- low manipulation (basically no combing)

- weekly (sometimes twice a weekly)deep conditioning with heat

I didn't protective style per se. I wore braidouts or sometimes a wash -n- go. I never did any bunning. When I tried to bun, I found that my ends were breaking, so that was when I had a set back, and cut off almost 2 inches. So I wore my hair out year long.

It has been 15 months for me and it seems like I still have 2inches to get there, I will not be doing any trims/dusting or anything like that until my hair gets far enough past apl so that I can trim and still be at apl if you know what I mean.

We'll see. I trimmed, from a raggedy almost APL, to CBL September 1, but I have sooooo much new growth that I should be a little closer. I'm hoping to claim it by the holidays.

Thank you everybody for the inspiration.

It took about 4 months to go from an inch past shoulder length to APL...low manipulation styling was the key for me!

I'm not really sure, but I'll say 1 1/2 years since I started my HHJ around NL in 07. I also had setbacks (chemical damage, taking contraceptives and breakage) which slowed down my growth rate and retention potential.

Oooh I think I'm subscribing to this one  I feel like I'm stuck in the SL ditch, lots of others probably are as well.

It took me 9 months to get from SL to APL. What helped me was protective styling - either my hair was in a bun or braids and keeping the moisture/protein balance in check with my hair.

Still working on it.
I BD'd in October 2008 and I am not there yet, but I am exceptionally tall so it comes with the territory.
I am right there though, but I am not claiming it yet or else BSL will be miles away. Like I've said in another thread, APL is halfway to WL, so when I am full APL, i know that half the struggle is over. I also think that SL-APL is the longest hurdle, so it will be good to know that the worst is over when i am full APL.

ETA: what has helped me is NO heat and bunning 24/7. I am so sick of this bun, I am about to hurl..but I'll be wearing it out more when I reach my APL goal.

there is no poll option for me. it took me two years to go from bc to apl. i only had 1 hair cut in those two years from sl to neck length. ♥

I began my HJH in March 2009 at SL and I reached APL in November 09, but a scissor-happy-stylist set me back, but I'm back to APL.

What has helped me retain length is:
1. Strengthening shampoo and mild protein treatment (PM Super Strong Daily Shampoo and PM Super Strong Treatment).
2. Pinning and bunning my hair, keeping it off my shoulders. Pincurling my hair at night, basically low manipulation.
3. Deep conditioning to maintain elasticity.

I'm sad, I was nearly APL last summer, but somehow I lost some of it and went back to shoulder length in January after a trim :(. Oh well, I'm using megatek and castor oil now, and my hair is passing SL already now, hopefully APL for the summer? Fingers crossed :D

I would say it took me anywhere from 8-9 months. I attached a Pikistrip I did a few months ago, because of my relaxer time table, the pics are 10 months apart.

I think what helped me the most was cowashing, buns, and ayurvedic products.

Edited to remove Pikistrip link, I added to my signature.
