I've been reading for months about how MN speeds hair growth. But I'm now looking at the ingredients list and it has stuff like mineral oil, PEG, and propylene glycol in it. So is it still safe to use on one spot of my hair? And does the new growth you all get actually LAST?

I'm one of those who doesn't believe MN speeds hair growth. I think MN takes care of a fungal issue, if you have one, that is impeding normal hair growth and so by helping treat the fungal infection, you hair is free to grow normally. I think it worked for people who had some sort of dermatitis on their scalp and they saw results and then everyone jumped on the bandwagon.

Indeed, the product may have "bad ingredients" but so do a lot of medicines but that doesn't mean they don't do their job. The question is what side effects do the "bad ingredients" have. So it's really up to you what chances you're willing to take. I personally would not use it if I didn't know for sure I had a fungal issue coz I don't toy with medicine like that. But even if I had a fungal issue, in my research I've found a lot of natural products that work on fungus (garlic, tea tree oil, coconut oil/caprylic acid) that I'd probably try those instead.

My sister's dermatologist told her to use it for one month...twice a week for her dandruff and also for her thinning edges that he could not find a reason for.

He did share with her the side effects that some experience - headaches, itching, etc - but he said it was ultimately harmless and might help her in those two areas - dandruff and thinning patches.

It worked for her, and then she stopped when the condition cleared. Her hair grew too.

For me...I got massive headaches. I will not put it on my scalp - EVER AGAIN! I thought I was dying, the headaches were so bad....

That's all I have to offer. I don't think the "bad" ingredients are that much a big deal...just watch out 4 the side effects...

I have only used it for a week now, I have not experienced any headaches and so far I have used it daily, mixed with grease.

I will not apply it to my daughters hair...just in case.
I only experiment on myself.:spinning:

Ok well those responses seem reasonable...I've used it one one spot of my head for two weeks now (1/2 mn 1/2 castor oil) but no side effects... also, does anyone know if 4% works twice as fast as 2%?

I never heard of this stuff being prescribed by a professional for this purpose. That makes it a little more credible to me.:yep: I was worried about the side effects specifically, the headaches, indicating some serious problems were being caused by the MN...maybe not. But I still believe, as was also stated above, that it will not show you any increased growth unless you have a fungal issue that is inhibiting your hair from growing at its normal rate. I don't think it speeds anything up.

The dermatologist didn't prescribe it. He just told her to pick some up from Wal Mart as an over-the counter remedy that he knew worked for a lot of people. I didn't have any fungal issues when I used it, but I did notice speedier growth. I'm not exactly sure what it does for people with no issues, but it does do something and the hair grows more quickly for reasons I can't figure out.

My dad is a physician and he told me it would not hurt if I wanted to try it out. I just got headaches...:perplexed

I think the side effects are no more problematic than for most medicines out there today. If you look at the average commercial for prescription medications, it's mind blowing how long the announcer spends on side effects....kind of funny too.

I have used it for over a year now and I LOVE IT! I have no side affects from using it, and it does provide me with great growth!

I went from extremely (relaxed) short hair - to CB - to (natural) TWA - and now back on my way to SL. Waiting for my 1 year anniversary because I take new pics.

From what I have read in the past, some ppl can use it with great results, and some can't. Like any other products.

I like using it most when I am wearing braids because I am not co-washing every day at that time (in the winter months).

If you are looking for great growth and are afraid of trying it, then try something with sulfur in it. There are many products that give great results also.

I used it last Year and I must say that I got tremendous growth from it, I am a slow grower at .33 a Month, 1 inch every 3 Months, 4 Inches a Year, I received 3/4 of an Inch in 4 weeks, but I am a migraine sufferer, for like, all of My life, so in turn it gave Me severe headaches, but I wish I could use it again. But I am scurred!

I just started using it again this month to jump start my hair growth again.

Last time I used it was 2 years ago. I didnt get any negative side effects from it, and my hair grew quite a bit. I remember after just 4 weeks my hair had enough new growth to re-relax I think i had about an inch but I cant remember.

Like I said I just started using it again this month and its been 14 days, my hair has already got new growth coming in FAST. Mind you, I just relaxed November 30th.

So for me it does work.

I have tried it. I did get mild headaches the first couple of uses. I am discontinuing use for now because i am transitioning again and my hair was shedding pretty bad. The growth that I received was great, I'm talking an inch in less than a month. I did not retain the length due to the severe shedding and breakage. Trying to learn my hair all over again bc'd, was natural for a year, then permed (hated it) now transitioning : (

I used the MN 2% for a month while I was in braids. I started on my edges because I was afraid of the braids taking out my hair. I then moved to the crown area.

Let me tell you when I took out the braids!! Whoa I was so happy!! I didn't lose as much hair as I thought I would!!! I mean I have to be realistic I did lose some strands but nothing to be like OMGosh!!! I will resume using it again just trying to give my hair a rest!!

Never had any major side effects from using it. However, my SO used it under the recommendation of our dermatologist for scalp issues and had no problems. I used it as well and got tremendous growth results. No headaches, but I don't apply it direct. I dilute it with olive oil.
