How is it that you are OBLIVIOUS to when the stylist is cutting your hair?

The last time I was at a salon I don't remember being in front of the mirror too many times the whole time she was doing my hair. If I'm remembering correctly, she parted down the middle of my head and started on the sides and combed down each section she made and trimmed the ends. If I would've moved my head to see what she was doing then I really would've gotten more trimmed off than I wanted.

when my hairdresser cut the 7 inches of my hair i was not facing the mirror so i could not see...but i heard the thickness she was cutting into once they hack of a huge chunk at the back they know theres nothing else you can do as you will have to get the rest evened up:rolleyes:

I have been scalped before....many years ago and with a new stylist. I needed a relaxer and had not yet found a NYC stylist. I was referred to a woman in the area and during the trim, she somehow got lost in the trim and went over the same sections more than once. I was not facing the mirror and I lost at least 3 inches.

That has NEVER happened to me again. I always stop stylist when they even pick up a pair of scissors or hair spray. For my most recent dusting, I was facing the mirror and watched like a hawk.

Goodness, I am getting my hair done in about a month from now and I don't want her trimming anything. My last "trim" at a salon took me from full SL to NL. But I am one of those people who has a hard time speaking up for myself. This is really going to be a test for me :(

One time I was in bed sleeping and a hair stylist crawled through my window and cut my hair

:lachen::lachen::lachen:

They ARE sneaky!

I had a stylist give me a NL hair cut after her saying I needed a "trim".
I was young (still in high school) and trusted her, plus I was reading. Haven't been to a salon since. But if I did go to a salon now, you betta believe that wouldn't happen again! :look:

:lachen: at "scalped". That is what it feels like in the end.

Most of the time, one is facing away from the mirror. The client thinks the stylist is styling, when she is actually cutting OR the client has authorized a trim, and instead ends up with a cut.

It's really very simple.

This happened to me some years back, and I've never gotten over it. I'm still furious when I think about it. I asked for a trim, and this hef cut many inches off my hair! It was late and I was tired and I just trusted her. She never saw me again.

That's true too. They try to put your back towards the mirror.
Hence my resolution to do my own trims.

Exactly! They turn your back to the mirror and go to town on your hair. I do self trims too. It may not be perfectly even but it's damn close.

I have never had a sneak/without asking cut (how trifling) but I have had some give me a cut when I asked for a small trim. Now whenever I go to the salon (which is rare) I make sure to show them with my fingers how much I want trimmed.

thats how i went from below wl to bsl. i asked for an inch or 2... even had HER show me where she was gonna cut... then i was bsl

When I came back from Iraq my hair was a little longer than BSL... but i wore it in a super tight bun everyday so it was breaking at the ends... she gave me a "trim"... by the time she was done with her "trim" she said oh I gave you top layers too... the stylist had cut my hair alllllll the way to my shoulders. All i asked for was bangs. I was sooo mad, i went off and she only asked me to pay for the shampoo set. I was so mad

Sidebar: Wow you were in Iraq. I have not been to Iraq in Years had pleasant memories as a child before Saddam came to power. I am so sure it is a lot different now.

I've never had a stylist sneak and give me a trim without my knowledge. I have had them to cut more than I wanted. I'm sad to say that the cutting more than I wanted was always by black stylist. I go to a white salon and have 2 white stylist that I go to for my trim. They never cut more than I ask. They always show me exactly what they are going to cut, and never turn me or any of the clients away from the mirror.

I was deployed there... i used to be in the Army... but you can tell that it used to be a beautiful place..

I keep telling people this. Go to SuperCuts or CostCutters and let Becky trim your hair. I do not allow black stylists anywhere near my hair with scissors. And, since I am now DIY in everything except trims, I may never see a black stylist again!

ive let my stylist and my homegirl who went to beauty shcool--shouts out to u diva--i know ur butt lurking--cut my ends----

its true some damn stylist r so quick u dont know if they snipping or etc--but i have to face the mirror--i dont my back to the mirror--nah buddy

I WAS LOOKING RIGHT AT HER AND YET SHE HID THE SCISSORS IN THE REFLECTION OF THE MIRROR BY KEEPING THEM RIGHT BEHIND MY HEAD, SLIPPED THEM OUT OF HER APRON, SNIPPED OFF TWO INCHES SILENTLY AND SLIPPED THEM BACK INTO HER APRON.

That's one way.

This happened AFTER I TOLD HER THESE EXACT WORDS:

I DO NOT WANT A TRIM. I HAVE HAD IT TRIMMED ALREADY. DO NOT USE SCISSORS.

I asked her to have me face the mirror (from the beginning) and specifically told her what not to use on my head.

The only reason I knew she had done so, before I left, is that when I sat down the floor was clean. When I got up, she LEAPED FOR THE BROOM AND swept up two inches of LittleGoldenLamb off the floor with an odd smile.

Oblivious?

NO.

I have never had anyone sneak a trim on me! THey wouldnt dare do that , because the place I go to charges $20 for a trim so they better ask...Secondly it is definitely easy for a stylist to trim too much without you knowing. There is NO way to see them trimming your hair..even if you have a mirror in your hand to see the back- the stylist would be in the way. There is no way to tell the difference in sound of someone trimming at the 1 inch mark, vs the 3 inch mark. It is definitely easy for someone to not know how much they are trimming. Also, once it is done, it is done. Nothing you can do- You can get upset and go off on the stylist but it doesn't bring the inches back. ...I am a non confrontational person as well when I go to salons. I don't go to many salons now...I might let people get a little rough with my hair BUT scissors!!...oh no

Wow.

Last time I checked, professionalism, know-how, and communication skills are not limited to "Becky" or "white people".

The key is to find a stylist that can take direction well, handles themselves professionally and respects your requests in regard to your haircare. I rarely go to the salon but when I do, only black people touch my hair and they are professional, not scissor happy at all, listen to all my demands for my hair, only give me a SLIGHT trim, serve me tea, order lunch for me and do my makeup before I leave out the door, this is a black owned and black staffed salon which I will be featuring on my blog, I know of many more just like it.

The issue is not the race of the stylist, but rather, the character and quality of the stylist.

I always know when they are trimming my hair but I usually don't know how much is being taken off until I see it on the floor. I was not facing the mirror or I couldn't see behind me if I were looking in the mirror.

most stylist have you facing away from the mirror, but if you're facing the mirror you still can't see what they're trimming behind you. Even if you had a hand held, the stylist is standing in the front of the mirror. U can't look sideways or you'll have a crooked cut.

You have to have some understanding before going into the cut. Ask them to show you what they are cutting to feel comfortable.

The salon I used to frequent had full length mirrors on both sides of the stylist's stations, and you were facing another station's mirror in front. There was no way you couldn't see what they were doing unless you kept your eyes closed the whole way through. Then again I had a great stylist whose focus was on healthy hair, and never gave me a trim unless I asked for one.

I'v had it begin to happen but nver oblivious
begin a sneak cut WITHOUT MY PERMISSION but I caught her and jerked around and whirled and jumped out of the chair just.......... as she was about to snip...she'd aslready asked and I'd already said no...
caught her with the scissors in hand ..and PITCHED A HOLY FIT

WHAT THE... HELL... ARE YOU DOING???????

o.. I was just taking off a little ..

I SAID................ NO!
NOT EVEN A LITTLE.......

What is wrong with some of these people????
freakn sadists
