This thread is a WARNING with alittle advice attached - lol

I see threads on vacation hair and whats the best way to wear it, etc, but never really a warning or thread on AFTER-vacation hair.

so a couple weeks ago i went to cancun for about 5 days. It was fun but my hair REALLY SUFFERED. pool 3 out of the 5 days, but only got it wet twice. I noticed early on that the water was harsh - my hair and skin was the driest its been in my LIFE. i felt gross, like sandpaper and my skin is normally so soft. In any case - of course there was some partying. One night i wore a half wig to the club. The next night i wore my natural hair in a curly pony tail - BIG MISTAKE.

Somehow we ended up chilling with some guys and one just LOVED my curly hair. he took my scrunchie out and wouldnt return it. it didnt look soooooooo bad so i just gave up trying to get it back. so there was dancing and sweating - all the clubs were outdoors.

my hair was already dry but i had managed to keep it knot free the whole time UNTIL this night. OMG - i got back to the hotel room - it was HORRID. i washed it, and then proceeded to use the WHOLE hotel bottle of conditioner as well as EVERY DROP of conditioner i had in my suitcase.

I've seen threads on here about dreads but i really really NEVER thought it would happen to me. trying to get dreads out with water that was 'bad' to begin with - HORRIBLE. i didnt know what to do, so i made one big wet braid and put it in a bun for the flight home - THIS WAS A GOOD THING. think that wet braid helped save my hair - kinda like a DC with just water.

I get home. take out the braid (which i made w/out untangling it at all) and then get in the shower (w/out untangling it at all). i know this is bad for some pple but for me, there was no way i could even finger comb this dry mess - just too many dreads.

anyways - i shampoo with giovanni smooth as silk, then condition with aveda (i think it was the moisture remedy but i dont really remember). i globbed conditioner on my ends and then worked my way up. i put the most on my ends b/c that was where i was going to attempt to start parting to detangle in sections.

I managed to get my hair a bit softer and i could make some parts but still could not comb through it all without getting stuck, even under running water. so i remembered someone on here dealing with their daugthers hair and being SAVED my PM's the Detangler. so i grabbed it from my shelf and globbed it on. THIS WORKED. I used it, combed with my shower comb, and rinsed.

ahhhhh - hair back to normal.....
i did lose alot in the drain but i managed to pull through it. just wanted to post my story

My hair has done this before and I lost alot of hair. I learned my lesson about dry hair, tangled hair and water. Glad you pulled through it.

thanks for this post. I am 10wks post and I don't go anywhere without a bottle of oil or coconut oil. nothing detangles for me like oil. But I am glad that PM "the Detangler" worked for you

I was just thinking "note to self: take a bottle of oil on vacation." Glad your hair survived.

Horror story with a pleasant end...!!! Thanks for the forewarning. :yep:

Great story, thanks for sharing. My loose natural hair was very prone to tangles as well, I am glad you saved your beautiful hair :)

Thanks for sharing. I will keep that in mind because I am about to go on vacation for a week and I will be in a pool swimming everyday.

Glad to hear your hair was OK- I experienced serious dryness coming from Aruba. I had to put my hair away and up my moisturizing and just overall babied it for a couple of weeks before I was satisfied. I har ya!

Glad you saved your hair girl! I'll probably jump in braids when I go on vacation.

good idea. i went once with cornrows and it was very low maintenance (which was great) but i hated the way they looked in pictures - ick - my ears stuck out. i like box braids better but they take much longer.

I find it alot easier if I wet my hair and apply conditioner before going in the pool. After I'm out of the pool I immediately deep condition as soon as I get home.

I'm the same as you, when I get out of the pool my hair is dry as sandpaper and just nasty to the touch. I can't rely on those little tiny bottles of conditioner the hotels gives out so I try to put a bottle of condish in my luggage.

I'm glad you didn't have a set back!!

This thread got me to thinking. What products do you take with you on vacay? Especially post 9/11 when we can't take large bottle on planes. (oh we don't usually check in our bags we travel fairly light)
Once I had to call down to the desk and let them know "THIS WILL NOT BE ENOUGH CONDISH!"

I had a similar situation b4. Mane & Tail Detangler saved my life. That stuff works great on me. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have it. I found out about it by accident. Now it is my staple for every wash. YAY!!

I pack very light too and dont check my bag. i purchase that 'travel pack' of containers from CVS and fill EVERY BOTTLE with condish - lol. You can only have 6 oz per container but as far as i know, there is no limit on HOW MANY containers you can have. The hotel had biosilk and the bottles werent actually that small, but it still wasnt enough and i had to share with my roomie.

Thanks. That was the plan on my way to vacation, but when ur having fun and there is a pool side bar you dont always want to tell hotel mates - 'i have to go deep condish now BRB' - lol.

In this case, my hair WAS CLEAN b/c we had just taken showers to go to the clubs. It had leave in in it and EVERYTHING. Just leaving it out and sweating did me in... and b/c the hotel water is rough, fixing the issue was an ordeal in itself.
