And how often do you sharpen them? I have some stainless steel ones from Sally's that I bought some time last year. I usually just buy some new ones, but I figured I should at least try to work with what I have.

A friend of mine works as a taylor and has his done professionally, so whenever he has his scissors sharpened, I have my shears done as well.

I too purchased a pair from Sally's and you're right...no need to purchase a new one...just take care of the one you already have, especially if they were good/great shears to begin with.

Back in the day we use to sharpen our knives with some kind of stone. I don't remember what it was though.

Otherwise, we used a knife sharpener.

You can go to the local fabric store. They will usually sharpen them. I know the one in my area charges $5 to sharpen

I would say it's like "Iron sharpens iron" so a knife sharpener and even the foil would work too. If you do go to a fabric store you could ask them what it is that they use.
