How do you prevent \"close to scalp color\"

Ya know how when ya color your hair, the inch or so at the scalp always takes the brightest? How can this be prevented? Do you apply the color every but the first inch for a little while before applying it to the top part of the hair? Can the same method be used for highlites? What about highlites on natural hair?

Yes, you put the color on the roots last. The lighter roots thing is called "hot roots" the body heat makes the roots process faster. Try to color the inch closest to your scalp last.

Re: How do you prevent \"close to scalp color\"

that exact thing just happned to me this weekend. my roots are flaming red and the rest of my hair didn't take the color. i don't know what to do. i used clairol t&t in flaming desire. my hair was already very dark and i did a semi-perm beautiful browns 2 weeks ago that didn't take at all. any advice ladies for someone who already screwed up and colored their roots too soon in the process?
