How do you not apply heat?

I can speak for myself, I do not apply direct heat (curling irons, blow dryers, hot irons, straightening combs)to my hair. But, I do use the hooded dryer (indirect heat) for my rollersets.....

I've been on the boards since December, and honestly, you'd be amazed at how much direct heat you can cut out. Before LHCF, I'd wash my hair every week, and after I washed I'd blow dry, flat iron and then occassionally curl. Granted, my hair was healthy because I always used product and protected it, but THAT'S A WHOLE LOT OF HEAT AT ONE TIME!!!

Now, I don't use the blow dryer (barring the times I go to the salon, which ends up being 6 X a year), and I've used my ceramic flat iron and curling iron less than 5 times since I bought them, and that's usually just to clean some things up in my style.

What's helped me stay away from direct heat is airdrying in a ponytail (to maximize straightness) and making sure to tie my hair down at night (to minimize the amount of combing/brushing/overall styling, so you build stronger hair) Sometimes I'll use the hooded dryer to help with a style.

Overall, you hair will thank you for it. My hair strands are so much thicker and stronger, they're more resistant to breakage, and my split ends are almost non-existant. You can tell the diference in a month, literally. Now, your hair might not always be "cute", so to speak, but I'd take health over style any day.

And with time, once you get more comfortable with not using direct heat and working with your wet hair, you'll be "forced" to be more creative with you styles, and the ladies on this board have TONS of suggestions for protective styles, roller sets, wraps, etc. that will keep you away from direct heat (I'm still learning! I like to stick with my boring lil' ponytail...and if I'm feeling particularly daring, I'll put it off to the side!

Airdried rollersets (or like someone else mentioned a hooded dryer on low heat), buns, twist or braid outs - there are all kinds of things to try. You have to get used to the new look which may take a little time and practice but my hair loves me for the 'no heat' mentality. It really works for my hair.

I've survived without using heat myself (heat is used at the salon every two weeks) with the right products. Before, if I tried to wash and airdry my hair it would look a hot mess--crispy ends and very frizzy hair. Now, I use the NTM line and my hair drys very soft and straight. I thought only type 1,2 and 3s could airdry but I was wrong.

I use the braid-out and twist-out method. I didn't think I could manage w/o heat either, but now the thought of using heat is unappealing.

Braidouts, twistouts have allowed me to have styles that require no heat and healthier hair.

But back in the day I thought I couldn't survive without my pressing comb.

Lots of LHCF members don't wear their hair straight on a regular basis, esp. in the summer. Do a search for "braidouts" and "bantu knot outs" and you should get some great ideas.
Dontspeakdefeat has a great step-by-step for bantu knot-outs in her album.

I agree with everything the lades have already said. I have used my blowdryer twice in the last 5 months and now I don't even think about using it. I also haven't used my curling iron or my flat iron sice then either. I air dry my hair in a ponytail (this really helps to allow your hair to dry straight without the use of a blowdryer), after its dry I usually twist my hair into 4 bantu knots. When I take them out in the morning I have soft, wavy, bouncy hair.

Also as JenniferMD said the products you use are important. I wash with motions lavish conditioning shampoo, condition with suave milk and honey, apply NTM silk toucj leave-in and spray wonder 8 oil. This conbination of products leaves my hair soft and bouncy. I too never thought I could style my hair without heat but know I know its possible. I was once in a constnat battle with split ends and know that has vitually ended and its all because I stopped using heat.

Try airdrying sometime and let us know how it works out.

I have seen a difference in my hair since I started airdrying and wearing my wigs, drawstring ponytails and roller sets I no longer blowdry.

I'm with covergirl I have a problem airdrying, I can't braid my hair when it's wet it just tangles and when it it slightly dry and I braid it the ends are all kinky and hard to comb because that's where the braids get small.

Covagirl,

I normally wear my hair in a ponytail 24/7. However, on occasions when I choose to wear it strait without applying direct heat; after washing, conditioning etc.. I will apply some leave in moisturizer, wrap my hair wet, tie it up and sleep overnight. The next morning my hair is dry and strait. Not as strait as using a flat iron etc.. but strait enough.

Off topic, Nay your hair looks awesome! I love the twistout! I am an avid twist and twistout wearer and I think twists are more fun than braids too...easier also.

When I want straight hair I wetset really early... about 5 or 6pm, and by the next morning my hair is dry...

straight hair with no heat.

Welcome to the board!

It's not hard, you just don't do it. Let your hair air dry. That's how my relaxed hair grew to my bra strap. When I stopped using heat on it, it grew by leaps and bounds.

I agree. My hair really took off when I stopped using the curling iron!! I do use a hooded dryer for my rollersets, but that's the only heat my hair gets (besides my heat cap which I use for deep conditining).

This is VERY easy for me and I see you live in Brooklyn so you have access to Domnincan salons. I haven't used a curling iron in YEARS. I go to the Dominicans once a week and wrap my hair at night. There is no need for curling irons or blow dryers. Once a week I don't think is bad for your hair. I also only have the dominicans blow my roots and not the whole head and then I keep it wrapped and comb it down every morning. This is a VERY easy way to eliminate all that heat on your hair from curling irons and stuff.

I used to think there would be no way I could acheive the style I want without direct heat but I gave it a try anyway and that was back in December.

I do use my hooded dryer on warm to do a roller set. I air dry in a ponytail or wrap to get the straight style I want. It may not be bone strait but I always have lots and lots of body and swing.

When I get 8 weeks post relaxer I wear braid outs, bantu knots, french twists, etc. Before I went heat free I purchased a Ion hand held blow dryer for $30 I got to use that and my ceramic flat iron which was a gift ONE time.

You can do it! Your hair will thank you for it by growing long and strong!

Thank you. Thats exactly how i feel. I style my hair in some ways that alot of folx here dont understand and feel i should press it and/or perm it but thats ok cause they'll hush up when they see all the growth i get when i stretch it out and show'em and tell'em that all them styles that they all called 'nappy, no good, get a perm, str8'n it', etc is what got my hair to this length that they see it at now AND this thickness that they see it at now.

For me it was a great relief to know I didn't have to use all that heat to style my hair. I really didn't know there was another way until I discovered LHCF and other hair boards.
I 'm still amazed I haven't used heat since July of last year! It has made a big difference in the health and thickness of my hair (no split ends) and is helping me to retain my length.
Right now I wear mainly braidouts and French Twists after airdrying my hair.
