I have a couple of friends who have long hair (both reach past their bra strap) and they go to the Beauty Salon once a week and their hair is in perfect condition.

It never breaks and rarely sheds and it looks so vibrant. And here I am in protective styles daily caring for my hair the more than anyone I know (outside of this message board of course) and my results are just like theirs.

Is it true that some people can handle more damage with their hair (ie. excessive heat, pressing, Rough styling) than others?

Luck and genetics...I think it's the same thing as people who can stuff themselves and not get fat or people who sleep with their makeup on and never get a pimple.

I agree with the having stylists that know what theyre doing

I just dont trust them period...so it doesnt even matter. i'd have to case the joint and toss out all the scissors and heat appliances (except for the blowdryer or hairdryer--those can stay) if i ever went back to the shop. i just dont trust them anymore.

Actually, when I go the Dominincan salons, i usually see women in there with bra strap hair and longer, its not unusual at all.

I've seen some sisters who go to the salon with AWESOME hair, and I just know full and well that the only advise these sistahs need is to stop allowing the SHS cut their hair so damn much. So add an average stylist with one that knows how to do relaxers quickly and effectively, plus one that is NOT a SHS and a huge chunk of us are already well on our way. I decided a LONG time ago that I did not have that kind of money to give them weekly, though (and not because of any damage, just the cost for a student), so this never was an option for me.

This is not surprising to me. If you find a stylist that knows what they're doing, I think you're ALMOST always in better hands with a professional. This may be apples and oranges, but when I was getting facials every week, my skin was flawless.

But all of the excessive heat is so damaging, Right? I'm glad that I have found this board and I can care for my hair and I can be the one to determine what goes in.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I don't think heat once a week is excessive. I use the same exact products as my stylist, blow dry and flat iron every five days, and this is the healthiest my hair has been. And my hair is very prone to breakage! Personally, I think the secrets lie in the products. If you find a good deep conditioner and protect against heat you won't have a problem. (I use a ceramic flat iron too, so maybe that helps.)

I have a girl friend that grew her hair from 2 inches to bra strap in about a year and a half visiting my stylist for a blow out every week, and a relaxer every 6 weeks. It's more than possible! That's just one example!

I am doing the once a week salon thing now, (which is why I don't really come to the haircare board anymore). I think the combination of scalp massages, salon quality conditioning treatments and the fact that most salon goers don't touch their hair except to wrap and unwrap contribute to their healthy hair growth. Besides, if the stylist was trained properly, they should know how to use heat so it benefits, rather than fries the hair.

I used to do this in NY and my hair grew as long as it's been since I've been a child. Much of that was personal care at home, but the weekly visits for a good rollerset and blowing my roots (which helped me stretch my relaxers and minimize any tension at the line of demarcation) made a huge difference as well.

I am only hoping that I can achieve the same results here WITHOUT my weekly fix. If you have a good stylist and the prices are reasonable, a little professional assistance in the form of weekly salon visits can be a big help.

i went to a great salon 2day, here's the bigg but, she told me i need a trim.....im like oh yeah, u wont be the one to give it...lol....then she tells me it is too even it out...
syke!! ya wont clip my ends, but she was a great stylists, im happy i found this salon, she really took the time to care for my hair and extremly friendly!! i likey, but no cuttinng........

This is what I need. I found a salon that only charges $15 for wash n' sets. I am about to start going to them weekly when my new growth becomes unruly

I wonder if they will let me bring my own conditioner...

It seems that everytime I ask for a roller set and then a doobie at a Dominican salon the stylist always says "let me blow out the roots first". I feel like they are really blowing out the whole thing and then wrapping it. But I think my hair could actually deal with just a roller set and a doobie (no blow)

I wish I could go to the salon once/week. Even if I had the money my concern would be the comb out. For me that is the time that my hair rips and breaks. So, now that I have thought about it, I'll keep to every three weeks.
