How do long-haired naturals do protein treatments?

I did a hard-core Aphogee treatment this weekend (for the second time since I started my journey). It was a pain finding the product b/c I didn't recognize the new packaging. Did the formula change too? Anyway, I tried fitting my head under a hairdryer but the ends were sticking out. Then I tried fitting my head under a soft bonnet but by then the product had hardened.

How do you naturals with long hair do protein treatments?

My understanding is that heat is needed so the product can bond to the hair. I don't think that happened in my case. Should I do another one, when?

I had the same issues too when I did it while natural sometime last year so I never bothered to do it again. I ended up clipping the ends up which I think is a no no but it worked for me.

That's what I'm thinking too...
Thanks Wonderstar...How's the relaxed hair going? Updates please :)

Well I used to do the protein treatments every 6 weeks, but I stopped doing the Aphogee treatments when I became a PJ and also around the time I was hennaing my hair.

I just purchased the new Aphogee (its called Keratin something) because my 19 yr old daughter's hair was shedding. It worked like it always did, one treatment and her hair is not shedding anymore. So its safe to say it still works great. I did a protein treatment on myself even though my hair is fine.

Instead of doing it every 6 weeks I've decided to just wait until I feel like my hair needs it.

i use motions CPR every 6-8 weeks and a DC every week.
Works great for helping me maintain protien/moisture balance

Thanks ladies for your responses.
My questions is more on how do you fit all the hair under a heating cap if it's too long to fit AND you can't pin it up. Do you all pin up eventhough the instructions say to leave the hair lose?

BostonMaria,

Does Henna make your hair stronger? Also, I bought the Keratin bottle (red writing) and it's not quite like the two-step protein treatment. The bottle said to leave it on for 2 min...

As a medium length natural I did them once or twice. They worked but I'm incredibly lazy. I would suggest V05 total hair recovery (if you can find it). It work wonders and it comes with a nifty plastic cap!

I never use heat for my protein treatments, I put a small hot towel on my hair, cover with a shower cap and I almost always do my protein treatments on dry hair, for no longer than 30 minutes or my hair will be a hard mess.
