How do I trim my fro, split ends HELP

Maybe Ive asked this question ages ago but I havent had my hair trimmed for donkeys years. Im texlaxed but it still goes back into a fro, I was thinking I could part my hair exactly into mini braids then get my SO to measure and cut of a set amount to even it up?? How do people do this at home??

My hair seems to have developed quite a few split ends recently, please help!erplexed
