great question... i still have problems with this. the general rule though is if your has no stretch and it just breaks... then it needs protein. however, if your hair is too stretchy then you need protein.

Take a strand and pull both ends with your fingers. The amount of stretching it does before it breaks will tell you. If it breaks too easily you need more moisture. If it stretches too much and your hair feels mushy, you need more protein.

What the other ladies said - when my hair starts feeling like a rubberband, I know I need more protein. I've had too much protein when it starts feeling crunchy.

So, too stretchy, mushy means need more protein; breaks right away means too much protein, so..... what will happen when you stretch hair that has a proper balance of both?
