I just grew out the perm, I wear my hair pressed most of the time so its not a problem, once I have achieved a lenght I want I will cut off the straight ends
It's easy to transition when your last perm chews you up. I am serious, in places my hair was 1/2 inch and in others it was neck length (where it had been since the 7th grade) I really believed that my hair just didn't grow. (But that is another story.) I transitioned by weaving. I would weave for 3 months (I'm cheap)take it down, wash/condition and weave it back up the same day. And When I would take it down the first year, I would see my hair getting shorter as all the damaged pieces actually broke off. The second year I saw the growth.
I chopped my hair of the first time I went natural. But the next time I go natural I will transition for 1 to 2 years in weaves, braids, and cornrow extensions. When I did chop my hair off I was constantly worried about it not growing fast enough. next time I 'm going to try and get 20 inches in 2 years which is waist length on me I haven't decided when I will try going natural again but it probably won't be any time soon.
It wasn't a concious decision for me. I had a relaxer and then I just never relaxed again. My hair was terribly thin and pitiful though so ended up beign a great thing.
I'm still transitioning and will be for quite some time. I really hate the way I look with short hair. I plan on wearing a fake afro puff until all of my hair is cheek/chin length (shrinkage included).
I trim off a little relaxed hair every few months...
trasnitioned and wore my own hair in cornrows a lot of the time, or self-braided with extensions, trimming every now and then. I did this for nearly a year before I got fed up with the straight ends and cut off about 4-5 inches of relxaed hair. I was lucky, no breakage (that started when I used a hair dryer every 1-2 weeks!)
i'm transitioning right now, but i decided from the beginning not to cut my relaxed hair off. the two textures are not that different so up until now i haven't experienced breakage. i'm just gonna take it day by day and see how my hair reacts. i stay away from heat and deep condition a lot. i try to let it grow to waist length. when i'm there i will decide if i wanna cut it a little bit or keep it like that. i'll see.......but i am glad i made this choice
oh i forgot about trimming. i only trim when i see damaged/split ends. my last trim was in february. i think i can go another one or two months. avoiding heat and oiling the ends really helped a lot. cause usually i do see split ends after three months. but this time this is not the case...
I was natural for a little over a year before the tangles became too much. I still have some relaxed ends (now texturized). I transitioned by twisting and used moisturizers such as IC oils and curl activators. Breakage was sever in certain areas and almost non-existent in others. Combing was the most difficult part and I only combed my hair after and during washing.
When I transitioned...I did it by rollersets or just rinsing daily and pulling my hair back into a low bun or ponytail. I used KMS Flatout temporary relaxing balm on the roots, to help keep the 2 textures similar as possible(to avoid breakage), until my natural hair got to chin length...then I chopped off the realxed hair. The next time though I will probably do the big chop.
I transitioned for 2 years...I must say it was difficult the two textures caused a lot of tangles..but I was too scared to make the big chop so I pressed my hair during that time...unfortunately I didnt use much heat protectant in my hair so it did some damage to my new growth...well its been two years now and I finally chopped off my perm myself...most of the permed parts of my hair broke off anyway....and my hair has grown to a little past my shoulders...I must say it feels so good to have one texture on my head now....patience is definately a virtue.
