I know its a crazy question but I have yet to understand how to achieve such a perfect fro. How did they do it?? Any ideas?

They grow it, and pick it out with an afro pick.

There were also things called "blow-out kits" to further increase the length of your fro. You would pick out your 'fro with a blow dryer.

I still do mine like that. This morning I moisturized. Picked it out and patted it down. And at night back in the day, we would braid it up.

Those are models though, so they probably had some help with scissors rounding it out.

OMG I remember those days. To make a curly fro, apply grease and water then roll on rollers. The next day unroll and pick, fluff, and pat into shape. Geez the good old days.

Thanks yall! Where would I be without my sister girls! Those are some real tight afros in the picture! Brings back memories of watching those old blaxploitation movies back in the day!

My dad used to start with a wide tooth comb and comb it out. Repeat with a smaller set comb, repeat again, etc...until it was perfectly rounded. Idk how small the smallest comb was. I'm assuming they were all afro-style combs.

twist, braid or cornrow at night and pick it out in the am and pat it down. clippers and trimming with the scissors also help with the shape.
